Just received my new strip sander and am in the process of sharpening my things. I watched Nicks strip sanding segement and was wondering if anyone knows where to get the surface conditioning belt he was talkjng about.
By the way I am a new member new to woodworking and new to computers! Its been days just trying to figure out how to post.
You all are really helpfull in your posts, ive learned a lot just lurking in the backround

I also welcome you to the forum Peterc. You will find the kindest, most unselfish people on any woodworking forum here.

I hope you also purchased the sharpening attachment with your strip sander. It's everything that Nick demonstrates and indeed can put a razor sharp shaving edge on most bench and turning tools.

The belt you seek is available from many woodworking supply houses however let me recommend Lee Valley. They have a complete on line catalogue at http://www.leevalley.com. You will find many fine sharpening belts along with the leather belt and compounds. I wish Shopsmith would also supply a belt. You will probably have to remove a bit of housing material from your sander in order to keep the belt from rubbing. It will be apparent where once you mount it.

Oh Oh! I'm sorry! I misread your request and you said; "surface conditioning belt". I interpreted that to be the leather belt. Shucks, go ahead and buy one anyway. Once you see what it can do to that final surface you will be glad you bought it.

That number is 1"X42" Leather Honing Belt 68Z80.02

Have you had any increased vibration or knocking noises with your DeWalt SS?

I have the sharpening attachment ,just need the leather strop, thanks for the heads up on lee valley. Looks good.I was hoping to find out about the surface conditioning belt as I do have some rusted hand tools and this looks like the perfect tools to clean them.
Again thanks for the welcome and info. I know you guys are the best from previous posts I ve read.

Another source is Klingspor. I think you must be talking about non-woven abrasive belts. Mc Master-Carr and Klingspor .jet
