Drill Bit Sharpening

Today I mounted one of those drill bit sharpening rigs onto the table of the Shopsmith by drilling 2 1/4" holes.

I put them in the center and in line with the chuck -- could have offset them too I suppose.

I put one of those 8" thin stones in the chuck, but it seems to me it is too coarse a grit for bits.

That big sanding disk that came with has some nice emery glued to it.
Would be a nice finishing touch to the first cutback.

I give up! What a hassle trying to get the photo small enough to attach.

Any suggestions as to the best stone for bit sharpening?

Hi and welcome
I do my drill bit sharpening on a Drill Doctor. I have the original model and it puts a superior edge on conventional twist drill bits. All of the other do-dads left an inferior edge and/or angle.

Just about any fine grit 12" sanding disk will do.

My Smith came with emery cloth glued to the big sanding disk.
I'll have to try that.

It's an insult to call this a do-dad as though it's not much more than a gimmick. I almost sprung for a Drill Doctor but for under $30 I thought I'd give this a shot after watching a few videos.

There's a bit of an art to using this jig with success I'm thinking -- as opposed to plug-and-play for dummies.

How do you sharpen brad point bits?

Don't know what a Brad Point is.

I have not needed to sharpen mine yet but I would guess a file or sharpening stone possibly even a dremel tool would work. It would have to be small enough to fit between the spur and center point. It may even be possible to make a sand paper paddle to fit the bit. If using sand paper, I would use 350 grit or higher the same as if you were sharpening a chisel or plane iron.
