My brother found this free table saw and brought it home. I was supprised to see it was a
shopsmith. I knew they were the top of the line but I'm having trouble locating info on it. It's a model 10er and the serial No.(this is where I have trouble) is 82727. Everything I find has a 6 digit number and this one only has 5. What do I do.

Ron, Welcome to the site. I would suggest you take some time to get familiar with the different sections here. There is a mountain of information here on the 10ER and a quick search will turn up more results than you can read in a year. The best thing to do is go to the Maintenance and Repair section and start with the stickies at the top of the page. Others will chime in shortly with more direct information.

Welcome aboard Ron.

The 10E/ER models predated the Mark V's and had their own series of serial numbers. Yours was made, approximately, late 1952 - early 1953.

There is actually a lot of documentation available on line.

These files have been collected and restored by member Everett Davis. To start you will want "MAGNA 10ER Restored Owners Guide" , and "MAGNA – SHOPSMITH PRELIMINARY MANUAL 1947" which contains a lot of additional information that Everett added.

And also get the file in the folder "PTWFE 10ER 1953" which explains in detail how to use your 10ER

Welcome to the wonderful World of Shopsmiths. Look at the links RPD supplied and you will be well on your way to understanding the Shopsmith Tool.

The Shopsmith Model 10E followed by the Model 10ER was the original 5 in 1 tool. A lot of changes occurred to the Shopsmith during the years the Model 10's were made from late 1947 through 1953. Yours should have the 7th version of the Headstock and the 2nd versions of the Table, Trunnion, Base & Headrest to name a few.

As for the serial number for the Model 10's they started at 1001 with the Model 10E. Later after a second plant started production for the Eastern half of the US serial numbers were preceded by the prefix E, ER or R. The prefix was later dropped which is why yours does not have a prefix in the S/N. This is not to be confused with the Model 10E which changed later to the Model 10ER. You are partly correct about the 6 digit serial numbers but those belonged to the Mark 5 machine introduced in March 1954 and continued until the Mark 5 went out of production in 1964. When Shopsmith Inc. formed in 1972 to bring back the Mark 5 into production, which occurred in March of 1973, the serial numbers started with SS-1001 and continued into 6 digit numbers with the SS prefix for the original Mark V until December of 1987 when Shopsmith Inc. changed the serial numbers to date codes on the different Mark V models. Mark 5 changed to Mark V on the machines themselves in early 1980, although Mark V had been used earlier by Shopsmith Inc. on printed materials and advertising.

Thank you all for the answers. I have been to my google but really didn't know what I was looking for. Thanks to you I have a better idea, I can go back and load up my laptop with information then I can finish cleaning it all up. I think I'm going to need some bearings but after setting for so long I would need some also.To bad the old mans son didn't share his interest in wood working.

The Model 10's are between 66 and almost 72 years old now. It is not surprising it could need a new set of bearings. I have restored 19 Model 10E's and 10ER's plus two more being restored. All but one has needed new bearings. The one that didn't need new bearings had them already replaced in it's more recent past. I also replace the power cords and switch since the cords are generally brittle, cracking and not grounded - not very safe. So they get a new grounded power cord. Most of the belts are old and cracking too. There is a lot of good information here on the Forum about bearings, cleaning and rust removal plus much more. Just search for threads on what topic you are seeking or ask questions. As you have already found out you will get a lot of good responses with help.

As you are gathering information on the Shopsmith Model 10ER add the PDF below to your collection. It is an addendum I made for the Owner's Manual about waxing parts instead of oiling them for lubrication.
