The next project is a redo on the liquor cabinet. It will be a combination of mahogany and alder. Part of it will be three large turnings out of mahogany in a tulip style to hold the platters which will be mounted on a vertical turnstile. The basic dimensions of the turnings are 15” diameter and 16” high. I am laminating them out of 8/4 African mahogany. The platters that will sit on top them will be alder. Today I started gluing up the first of the turnings.

I glued up the rest of the first tulip blank. It’s very heavy so this is going to be slow going. I’m not going to use the traditional tailstock. I have a stripped down headstock which I will mount on the tubes facing the powered headstock. That way I can use a faceplate on each end for better stability.

Given that a Mark V has an 8-1/4” swing, and you’re planning on a 15” finished diameter, what’s your plan for rough-cutting that monster glue-up down to an OD that will fit on the lathe?

I will cut it down on the bandsaw to about 15 1/2” diameter which will fit. The finished diameter will end up around 14 1/2”.

Aha! I normally rough-cut bowl blanks round on the bandsaw, but I was thinking that the 16” height of the workpiece would be too much even for my 14” bandsaw with riser block. But now I see that you don’t have to get the top section of your glue-up underneath the top bandsaw guide. I’m guessing that you have something larger than the SS bandsaw as well, that can handle the height of the glue-up base.

Yes I kept the outer level at 5” so either the SS or the grizzly will cut it easily

After a lot of carving with the bandsaw and sawzall I got the blank mounted on the SS. The PP did not like the slow speed and 50lbs of wood but it got the job done. Once I was able to get the speed up to about 650 rpm the motor stopped making that annoying noise. It is roughed out and now I can do the final shaping. I have two more of these to make but hopefully I will be able to speed up the process.

The first tier turning is done. We tried to use the different colored mahoganies to get the overlapping petal effect and i think it worked pretty well. Now for the other two tiers.

Paul, that is going to be absolutely stunning. I just went back and re-read your first post, and I think I finally understand what you’re up to. I can’t wait to see some pics of it loaded up with fancy liquor bottles!
