Need a measurement please...

Post by robhix »

Hey all,

I am building an updated LONG tool rest for my shopsmith lathe. I need to know the distance between centers of the upper tubes and the lower tubes. Anyone able to help out here?

Thanks in advance,

Hi,

I'm away from the shop and I can't guarantee accuracy. But I had sketched one time 8-3/8" across the bench tubes (center to center) and 6-7/8" across the way tubes (center to center). I'm curious so I look forward to hearing more about it....

These are eye ball measurements since I do not have the type of caliper to give you a real precise measurement.

The center to center separation of the upper tubes (way tubes) is 7 1/2" and the bench tubes are separated by 8 9/16".

All four tubes are 1.485" ID and 1.78" OD. Hope this helps.

I can't help but ask, if you are working on a Shopsmith, why could you not take these measurements from your own machine?

Center to Center Dimensions

Hey Rob,

The Way Tubes, that the motor slides on, is 7" on center.
The Bench Tubes, lower tubes holding the legs together, is 8 1/2" on center.
Center to center between a Way Tube and a Bench Tube is 7 5/8" but is on an angle since the lower tubes are farther apart than the upper tubes.

Hope this helps.
