48 inch resaw not dead straight? Strap it down!

Post by nuhobby »

Lately I've been making a set of shelves for my (now being used more!) "home office". In this case 95% of the wood is reclaimed from dumpsters or antique mall slabs. In particular, I had sliced a big 48"-long 8/4 oak beam into 6 planks. The resawing at the bandsaw saw a good deal of released tension, so the outcomes were essentially "bowed" "barrel stave like" planks.

In my pea brain I thought of making some "straps" to restrain those staves:

The proof of concept is working out decently; I'm nearing the end but I have to make all straps uniform and perhaps add a tad of counterboring. Anyway, the goal of reining in the bowed side-planks is working. Better I thought to do this than to shave each plank down to nothing on the jointer:

As it turns out, for trimming up and counterboring the walnut side-straps, I was able to simultaneously run the Horizontal Boring mode and Strip Sander mode for *rapid* progress.

Shelves are now moved to my office!

I like it! The straps work well and look good. Nice design.
