Upper Saw Guard Splitter...Split

Post by timster68 »

The other day I put the upper saw guard down onto the table not hard but hard enough that the mecahnism that spins around and prevents the wood to kickback actually went flying off in all directions. I was able to find most parts, but in essence that part of the guard is unusable. Has this happended to anyone else?

I assume part number 514367 would replace it but that is practically half the cost of an entire saw guard and since the guard I have is probably from around '86 or so, I'm debating just getting a whole new one since I had to get a new lower saw guard several months back when that one broke several months ago.

You have four choices. The antikick back pawls are what you talking about are riveted on.
Choice #1 remount them using a bolt and nut.
Choice #2 buy a new upper guard
Choice #3 if you have a 505, 510 or 520 buy a sharkguard (Oem upper blade guard that comes with a vaccum port on the top) http://www.leestyron.com/shopsmith510.php
Choice #4 use the existing guard without the kickback pawls. Mine rarely if ever engage and I seriously doubt their usefulness. The Sharkguard doesn't have them for instance.
