Speed Control Modification

I'm reworking a speed control on a '91 MV. The pork chop fits pretty loosely in the brackets due to somewhat splayed brackets combined with enlarged holes in the brackets. I was implementing the Bill Mayo fix, which took care of the splaying, but found that the #10 bolt was fairly loose in the bracket holes which still allowed more 'pork chop wobble' than I was happy with. Has anyone implemented or attempted this fix with a larger diameter bolt?

Are you using a full size shanked bolt, or one of those smaller shank bolts with 'rolled' threads.

Great point! This one measures .182". Full disclosure - I'm using parts from my spare parts drawer to see if the mod will save this one, not the actual parts recommended. It turns out I don't have anything that is both long enough and close to nominal diameter. I'll have to look for a low quantity source for these parts.
The bracket holes are pretty worn though. With a small C-Clamp in place to take the splay out while the roll pin was still in I'd estimate it was still 3X worse than another used controller I had removed when I did the PP upgrade. So I'm still thinking oversize bolt.

If you do ream the holes, you will have to do the same for the quadrant or install bushings(?).

I went with 1/4" bolt so that I could thread the upper bracket hole and use a jam nut. Drilled the lower hole and quadrant to 1/4", upper hole was slightly oversize for drilling for threads. This works fine, and it saves the bracket which I normally would have tossed for excessive wear. Time will tell if it is a good fix.
