Cole Jaws

Post by dannyshamoon »

Does anyone use a Nova set of Cole Jaws for use with the G3 chuck from SS? If so, how do you like it and does it work well?
Thanks

I purchased mine sometime ago, and I have to admit I have never used them for a bowl. I got them for doing some plates which are pretty much a flat bowl so may or may not be relevant.

As I recall they have two sizes, the smaller version is for I think 12" lathe but maximum bowl will be less then 7". The larger is for 16" lathe and bowls of about 9". I got the two sizes on special but have never tried to mount the larger one on the shopsmith.

The big kicker is that you will need to have a speed reducer, 10ER, or powerpro to use larger one on a shopsmith as the maximum speed is only 600 rpm. The smaller is more compatible with 800 rpm but it is safer to start at lower speeds and work up to the max.

I have nothing to compare them to but they do work well enough that I never sought to find something better. Not a glowing endorsement but when you have a tool that does what it should and does it well what more can you ask for?
