Planer head shaft damage from pulley.

Hello,

I’m new to the forum and Shopsmith tools. I purchased a used Shopsmith planer and found the pulley attached to the head was wobbling. After getting the pulley off i could see the shaft is damaged. I was wondering if any of you have machined the shaft to accept a 1/2” hub pulley?

IIWM, I would build it up, then machine it back to original size.

Very hard to analyze accurately without seeing/feeling the damage. What is damaged; the flat or the shaft?

A picture would be helpful.

As JPG said a picture would help. Depending on the damage, repair may not be the best option. Also simply rounding it down will not have the keyed and flat sides of the shaft as shown in the picture below. Older Cutter Heads may have only a keyed or a flat side but not both. The key or flat is used depending on how the Planer is powered, Pulley or Mark Mount.

I checked the service parts and unfortunately the Cutter Head is not available in either the Mark Mount or Pro Planer parts lists. It is the same part for either Planer. Repairing or finding a used one may be the only option. You may want to contact Shopsmith to check if a replacement is available if you decide to do that.

It looks like it had a reverse taper. I would probably just grind a flat back in it. It does not have a key way. The local machine shop wants $75.00 to do it. I have a metal lathe that I just got going but need the cutters and something to practice on. I wouldn’t want to mess this up.

Spin it and clean it up with fine emery cloth.

The flat can be 'improved' with a flat file.

I think this is salvageable.

Be careful to not repeat what the PO did by not orienting the pulley properly over the flat.

P.S. You could always get a Shelix head.

It looks to me like the OP routinely failed to mount the hub properly. The marks left by the set screw appear to me to be in-line with the flat but spread the length of the flat. Position the hub properly on the shaft before tightening the set screw.

Yes those marks are 'along' the flat, but do vary off the cl of the flat(especially the apparent last one). Apparently the po did not know to 'rock'.

dphoto1,

After seeing the end of your Planer's cutter head it appears you have an older Mark Mount Planer. The flat is for attaching a hub. A keyed shaft is for attaching a pulley. Re-reading your original post has me wondering what was attached to the shaft end to drive it.

First you said the pulley is wobbling but at the end said hub pulley. Is your Planer a Mark Mount using a hub (similar to the ones in the picture below) powered by the headstock or has it been mounted to a stand and uses a pulley/belt drive from a motor?

Since you have a metal lathe can you mount the cutter head on it to check how out of alignment the shaft end is? Using my Mark V or 7 I would clamp the far side bearing in my Nova Lathe Chuck and support the near bearing on the table so I could turn the cutter head by hand. I would use my dial indicator on the end of the shaft to check it. Something similar may be able to be done on a metal lathe. Just needs a steady platform to hold the cutter head while rotating it. That may give you a better idea of the best way to correct the problem.
