Sticky table tilt

Post by saminmn »

Hi, doing some alignment on my MK V 510. The table needs considerable force to start moving from 90 (like drill press mode). lock is wide open, but there is a lot of drag once it starts moving. Are there surfaces that need wax? I expect some drag is good for locking, but mine sticks to were I cannot fine tune/set 90 degree stop.

This will get you to the other thread where we recently discussed the $20 bill trick. I don't recall if the OP in that thread actually did it. Please let us know your results. https://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/view ... 78#p272678

I've never seen this problem. Mine moves almost too easily. I need to have a hand firmly on the table when I loosen the lock as the table will fall completely to the right when the lock is released. So, that says there is nothing inherent in it that causes the drag yours has.
I would start by getting inside it as much as possible and give it a thorough cleaning first.

Thanks for link. I am guessing previous owner was too cheap to use the spacer. Was not going to change the table alignment, but loosening 2 near side bolts will probably mean it needs it. Thanks for help. will let you know how it went when table alignment is done.

Thanks again,
Sam

The $20 doesn't stay put. Just during alignment.

You use a '20' so as to be unlikely to forget to remove it.

Got back to aligning today. With dollar bill in place tightened the 2 bolts i had loosened, after checking that metier track was parallel to saw blade. I then loosened the table tilt lock and retrieved my dollar. Tilting much better, can only imagine how good it would work if I'd had a twenty. I have not finished alignment and won't get to it till this weekend. (I do not see well for several hour after I get an injection in the eyeball). Anyway, anyway it will be a few days till I try out the table alignment.

Boy I lack confidence when it comes to alignments. I tried a couple of times to finish my alignment of the ss MK V 510. That is what I was up to when the sticky table tilt became an issue. I still have table alignment to do, but need to order a shim kit next time I make an order,

When I did the rip fence alignment I kept having to redo - probably 6 or 7 times. When I tried to lock down the new alignment the fence w0uld pull the out feed end of the fence more than a 1/16" to the left. I finally gave up and set the out feed end out of line well to the the right. When I locked this down, it pulled to the left as before, but ended up right where I needed it. not sure what I was fighting, but accepted it.

Today I did the Jointer Guard Upgrade. I got the upgrade kit several years ago (5 or 6 years maybe). It came with a fix to the kit, which was a washer with a bit clipped off at a bevel an a new step 22 for the instructions.

The instruction and the illustration did not include a part I had to use from the original guard assembly. This was a washer with a hexagon shaped hole. Without this part tightening new guard's nut draws the guard tight against the jointer's in-feed table. If this problem has been discussed, is no longer an issue, or is unique to me I won't open a workaround thread.

Thanks to all for pointing me to the solution. table tilt works great.
