Stay with 500 table or upgrade to 510/520 table for dedicated drill press?

Post by number3456 »

Greetings!

I bought a 1979 500 basket case that I will go through and clean up. I plan to use it as dedicated drill press and get rid of the table top cheapie drill press I currently have. I will replace the single bearing quill with a 2 bearing quill from the 510 I upgraded to the power pro headstock.

Question is can anyone think of a reason I should look for a 510 table to replace the 500 table since it’s only going to used as a drill press? I don’t want to spend the money for a larger table unless folks can think of a reason to add a larger table.

Thanks
Tim

If you need a larger table surface, a piece of 3/4" plywood will work. I think you need a 'topper' for the table anyway. However the rip fence comes in handy at times. Stay flexible!!! A shaper insert would be desirable.
