Drill Chuck

I am looking for a tail stock drill chuck for my 1941 10ER. Most seen on ebay and such have a tapered post for insertion into the tail stock. My 10ER has a live center installed at present and it appears to be held in the tailstock with two jam nuts on a threaded shaft.

What should I be looking for and is it special for the 10ER.

BTW I installed a tread mill motor and controller in place of the fixed speed motor so I now have a variable speed drive. Quite easy to do.

The "nut and bolt" form an adjustable (for alignment) #2 Morse Taper socket, that the live center is set in. Tap on the back of the live center and it should come out.

Any #2 MT drill chuck should then work.

Or you can get a tailstock chuck arbor and mount your Shopsmith drill chuck on that, I think this is the more versatile option as you can also mount a face-plate or scroll chuck on it for transferring the part turned blank.

Thanks so much for the reply. I'll take out the live center and check for the taper. I suspect any #2 taper will fit so all I have to do is select a chuck. I'm tending to a Jacobs rather then non Jacobs just because I have used the keyed chuck for many years. I don't feel you can get as good a grip on the drill with the twist type chuck.

As Ron pointed out the Tailstock Chuck Adapter is for using the Drill Chuck that comes with the Shopsmith. It is a less costly way of using a Drill Chuck in the Tailstock than having a dedicated Drill Chuck with a #2 Morse Taper.

There were 4 different versions of the Tailstock assemblies. The first 2 were for the Model 10E and the Wood Extension Table. Versions 3 and 4 were for the Metal Extension Table and are the only ones that came on the Shopsmith Model 10ER. They have the 2 piece Floating Center to adjust the tailstock center shown below.

When assembled correctly the nut will be on the side the Extension Table mounts to.

I do have to ask how you came up with the year 1941 for your Shopsmith Model 10ER? The first Shopsmith tool, the Model 10E came out in 1947.

You posted while I was writing my post, so here is an addition.

The Drill Chuck that came with the Shopsmith Model 10ER was the Jacobs 3326 and attached directly to the spindle with a set screw. If you have that chuck use it with the Tailstock Chuck Adapter. The Tailstock has a standard #2 taper so any #2 will fit.
