Hopefully you are still following along here and have been able to find the source of the noise. If so let use know which could help others with a similar problem.

In this post, from several years ago, BuckeyeDennis reported that he had found the squeal to be caused by lack of pre (side) loading on the bearings.

I had not read this before. It sounds very plausible, if I understand correctly.

I think that what is being said is that without the shims between the outer races the outer races did not spin together. By shimming they make firm contact with one another and thus spin together.

Is this the theory??

My understanding is that the preloading takes up any slack, so that the balls stay in contact with both the inner and outer races.

You have just provided me with my homework assignment. I do not understand but hopefully will after going this some thought and study time.

Is this about the two Tension Bearings? 56 514011 Bandsaw Tension Bearing 2

Together they serve as a grooved bearing, or are supposed to, but they could be spinning independently?
