Down for Scheduled Maintenance

Actually, that should say - "Down for Major Retrofit".
Not that this is at all important to any of you but I thought that I would mention it here and now so that if you never hear from me again you'll know why.
As soon as the FedEx guy arrives today, I will be going off line. If I come back up it will be with increased memory (I'll be maxed out at 1GB), a faster processor and a different operating system (XP). My hard drive capacity is not in question and I am using less than 20% of that. I think that in times past I might have spent money on the wrong upgrades.

Holy Crimenetly! First - improved knees, then better eyes and now faster and more up to date computing! We all knew you were good, but now? More and better sawdust!

If upgrading an HP computer... better be careful or you will end up with dreaded "BLUE SCREEN" with a message "can not recover, contact HP for service".

The dreaded
"BLUE SCREEN" belongs to Microsoft not HP.
Anyhow, I am back online but am still running Windows 2000. The XP disk I had must have been damaged.
However, I do have a faster motherboard with more memory than before but frankly I cannot see any noticeable difference except in the numbers that show when I view the vital statistics.
I haven't given up on XP. Just have to work it into the budget.
Whoever said Sketchup was free?

Dusty - I don't mean to be a buttinski, but the motherboard architecture probably isn't going to allow much, if any improvement in performance. The design was set when 233 mHz was state of the art. Tripling that isn't going to do any good if the data pipes into the processor are the same size.
It's time for a new motherboard. And if you drop XP on your current system, it will choke. I did that with a 500 mHz Pentium a few years back for my son. We got away with it because we used a sizeable video card instead of the onboard one, but he used his birthday money for a current motherboard within a year. After he did that he was as happy as a clam....if clams can be happy

I would have been better to go to a big box store and spend a few bucks and got a brand new box with all the bells and whistles.....
For the cost now a days it sometimes does not pay to upgrade.

For what it's worth, assembly of a pc is not that hard. I tired of paying the price for the hp and others and not getting what I wanted. You get more for your buck when you build and you know what is inside. This site is a good place to start if you are interested.....
