quill has no tension

So my quill wouldn't go up or down unless I muscled it. knowing that wasn't right, I tried cleaning to no avail.

I tried tensioning the quill. still no luck.
So where I am at is. The quill will go up and down only with me working the handle. It feels like it's stuck, it that hard to manually move quill.

there is no auto return for lack of a better word.

I feel like there is something wrong with the spring....but can't find info on the spring area.

Any help out there?

thanks

Have you removed the quill and checked how the quill handle feels without the quill. Be careful not to let loose of the quill handle. If you do, the spring will uncoil. Is the quill clean, waxed and without burrs.

hey dusty good to know you a still around.
Yes I have done that, very sluggish, no auto return.
hearing a click, I am thinking the spring is broke,
so looking further I am wondering if something is wrong with my quill spring as in a previous post... here is the pix there.

can I take the whole assembly off without getting myself into a world of deep depression?

shopsmith sells a 521875 Quill Housing w/Spring ... $33.37.

if my spring looks funky, is this what I need.
Haven't seen any literature on taking the quill housing off.

shouldn't I just be able to buy a new spring and housing and slip in on? part 40 and 39---or is that only able to be done in a dream world?

I suspect your spring has just come loose from the screw (41) that holds it to the shaft (43). If you look at your photo of the spring, you see that oblong hole, it just fits over the screw, which is actually not screwed all the way down to the shaft. The hole in the spring just catches onto the screw and the spring tension holds it in place. That is why you never want to let the spring become completely untensioned (I know this from experience). When you take the spring housing and shaft loose, don’t take it apart. You can use a small straight screwdriver to push the spring down onto the shaft as you turn and catch that hole. Maintain some tension, and put it back together.

Also, you said it’s hard to extend and retract the quill, I suspect that the screw on top of the headstock, which sits in the groove on top of the quill, may tightened against the quill. It needs to be just sitting in that groove to keep it from extending too far, but not tight enough to press against the quill.

If you haven't taken the quill out the set screw should not be the problem . You have to remove the set screw to remove the quill and then reinstall it when the quill is installed.

You said you cleaned the quill but, you should take it out and clean the whole quill as well as the head stock casting and the pinion teeth on the quill advance shaft.
