Okay... I always read on here how someone gets a bug and ends up buying another SS along with the one they already have. Well... I've been bitten by that damn bug.

Couple years ago I bought a 1991 Mark 5 with a 510 table system for $200... Then in September I ordered a shinny new Mark 7. Should be delivered anytime now.

Then I'm on FB Marketplace and low and behold here's a 1995 SS Mark 5 with the 510 table system for $300... It was like pouring gasoline onto a flame. LOL...

So today I went and looked at it and ended up bringing it home. But not without a few issues. Not sure of the terminology or verbiage but here is what is happening and if you can provide me with some links to posts on the topics to read I'd really appreciate it.

It is very dirty. Only visible rust is on the legs. Lots of saw dust. When I took the cover off to look at the shieves (sp) and the belts it had a lot of sawdust in it. And the owner said they never oiled it although it traveled through the speeds like a breeze and the dial turned quite easily.

Issue 1:
Headstock is stuck. It will not move along the way tubes. When I turn the lock it looks like the wedge next to the knob is pushing out. But the headstock will not budge.

Issue 2:
The Carriage doesn't move very well on the way tubes either. The way tubes are clean with no rust. But it does not glide. The crank to raise and lower the table doesn't operate very will either.

Issue 3:
The Quill is difficult to move. Takes a lot of force to move it and it does not retract back when you let go.

I am guessing everything is gummed up with sawdust.

Thoughts gentlemen?

Thanks Beeg. I've had some time to inspect it now that I've been home and nothing looks overly dusty. Not like I imagined it would be. Here's some pix.
That quill is stiff and I mean stiff and that headstock lock is hard to turn too. I turned the lock lever until the Wedge Lock started coming out with it. I tried tapping it with my hand and it would not budge. I tried a gentle tape with a deadblow hammer and still nothing. I'm getting the feeling I'm going to have to tear this down and really really clean it.

I guess it's dirtier than I thought after I saw the pix.

You should hurry to get it cleaned and working like a pristine machine because as soon as you do, your new one will show up.
How's that for incentive?

No pix of the rear headstock wedge lock. I think it is jammed.

Overall it kooks pretty clean considering. I think it will clean up nicely!

Is that domed washer stuck on the quill feed shaft?(and the sleeve etc).

Try pushing or tapping on the other end of that wedge lock shaft, on the back side of the headstock. Mine is not releasing correctly and I sometimes have to press on it to get the lock to release.

Why make it so hard to clean the back end of the quill, why not just pull the quill all the way out where you can easily clean and wax the entire thing? You have to be careful not to let the quill extension lever spring back as that will probably cause the spring to disengage. I use a small bungee cord wrapped around the quill extension handle and the closest way tube to hold it in the extended position. You only need to loosen the set screw located on the top of the headstock, and then extend the quill until it disengages; you can then just slide it out. While the quill is out you can clean the pinion gear that engages and extends the quill.

While the quill is out you can also clean and wax the headstock bore for the quill. I use the depth stop lock to keep the quill feed handle from returning and maintain spring tension while the quill is out. Turn the dial to 4-1/4" and lock it to prevent return.

Is this the rear headstock wedge lock JPG? And I am not seeing a domed washer on the quill. Where is that located?
