sticking speed changer

Post by tricko65 »

I am having problems with a sticking sheeve for the speed control on My 500 SS. I have almost totally rebuilt this machine after purchasing it 6 years ago. I have lubricated it according to the instructions in my maintance manual, but it still sticks from time to time. I don't know if it has a weak spring on it or not, don't want to take it off again, doing this by yourself if pretty hard. I have installed a new sheeve and key, carefully filing the key so there were no sharp edges before reassembling. It slid like butter when I first assembled it, but now even with thorough cleaning and lubrication it still sticks and will not come up to speed from time to time. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.:)

tricko65,
Sounds like you could have a problem similar to one I ran into: I bought a used Mk V several weeks ago. As I tried to run it up to higher speeds, the belt would become so loose that the spindle would not speed up. Sometimes, the belt would be so loose, the spindle would stop turning. Finally tracked it down to mis-alignment of the motor sheaves. One sheave was slightly offset (rotated on the shaft a few degrees) from the proper alignment with the other sheave. This meant that the ribs on one sheave rubbed sides with the ribs on the other sheave rather than interleaving as they should. This interference would not allow the sheaves to close together properly for the high speed position.

After removing the sheaves to no avail and reinstalling them, I discovered that I was able to place a large screwdriver through the ribs of the outer sheave and pry against side of a rib on the inner sheave. With a relatively light amount of pressure, I was able to nudge the sheaves back into proper alignment. As soon as I did this, the sheaves closed together under spring pressure. I tested the fit a few times, then reassembled the belt. The speed control has been working perfectly ever since.
