Negative image skunk???????

Post by reible »

So looking at last nights videos this one stood out. A skunk with a backwards color pattern. I have seen nature programs with skunks that are a more southern version that look like this but never here in IL.

Will be doing some more research today but feel free to do your own and report it back here.

February March is breeding season for skunks around here. Have to wonder if I will see more of this one and perhaps some little ones with these colors a bit later in the spring.

Is that thermal imaging? Are those really the skunk's colors?

I regularly see skunks and have posted them up on my youtube channel and they all look like the normal black with white strip versions called striped skunks. This one is different.

After about an hour searching I have to say that this is more then likely a striped skunk with an unusual color pattern. I was able to find a similar colored skunk with daylight pictures here:

I do hope it comes back a few more times.

Skunks are just like people. Some of them won't follow the rules.

Probably a teenage skunk. They're always doing stuff to their hair.

Sorry, I have no real interest in Skunks other than to not have them come into my yard. Waking up to the smell of a Skunk having passed through the yard on a nice cool summer night with the bedroom window open (second story by the way) and being greeted by their smell is not a pleasant way to wake up.

7 or 8 years ago I let my dog Gracie out first thing in the morning to do her" business" and when I opened the door to let her back in, she bolted into the house trailing the smell of the Skunk she had encountered in her fenced yard. I spent the rest of the day cleaning the smell of Skunk off of her and everything she came in contact with as she ran through the house until I caught her. That included her, carpeting and furniture. Now Gracie was a sweet little brown Shitsu - Poodle mix aka Shit/Poo but that is no reason for her to smell that way. :D

Gracie has since passed and I have many happy memories of her but that is not one of those happy memories just memorable.

Yet another different skunk showed up last night. This one has a very white tail but normal body pattern. Other critters come by too. Opossum, raccoons, mouse or mice, cat and a curious bird this morning.

As a reminder or if you haven't watched these type videos of mine, most are done with Blink cameras and IR light at night. I at this point have 9 cameras going. I have another on order so soon there will be 11. I think I will need another to cover another area of the yard but I'm not sure I have the range to do that. So at least the though of a 12 camera.

We live in a subdivision and are not next to a park or wooded area. This is pretty much just normal animal traffic here. It is quite possible that your yard is similar but you don't have the means of capturing what happens.

And just to be clear you do not smell the skunks unless they are hit with a car or spray for protection. If you are smelling a skunk smell it also can be from a fox. Fox marking smells, knew a guy who had one as a pet but it was just about too much to take. The fox escaped and ran out onto the road and got killed but was never replaced.

I'm really hoping that some young skunks show up this spring, well any young are fun to watch and this year I have a not of cameras at the ready.
