Speed Control Dial

Post by nebraska »

I'm confused about the groove on the back of the Speed Control Dial...

On the back of the Speed Control Dial (5042259) there is a groove. The Spring (504196) rides in this groove as the Speed Control Dial turns, but the groove stops short of covering the full rotation from slow to fast, creating a little "catch" when the Spring is forced to climb out of the groove and ride on the higher portion of the Speed Control Dial.

What is the purpose of this?

My GUESS is that it gives a tactile feedback at the limit of recommended saw/jointer speed range.

I believe it is called an anti-rattle spring! This is a quote from a section in hard copy instructions titled "Cleaning the Speed Changer":

"Do not remove the spring behind the dial. This spring keeps the dial from rattling when the machine is running."

I've no idea on why there is a detent in the back of the dial.

My greenie, you have to press down on a "button" below the power switch to be able to use the higher speeds.

They must use the same old castings for the new dials.
