Has anyone else had their wheels come apart?

I have not BUT the wheels are not really exercised much in my shop. My floor is smooth except for expansion cracks and the machinery is seldom moved.

I can't seem to find it right now, but I could swear there was a similar post in the last year or so on this forum. I believe they had the upgraded casters from Shopsmith and they started to fall apart similar to what you are showing here. Maybe one of the other forum members can find the thread or comment here that they also remember it. I would contact Shopsmith and see if they will replace them. They shouldn't be doing that...

There's this post about casters breaking from 2016 but it's not clear to me what was broken.

I found the thread. The link is below. It was posted last summer. Not sure if the OP got help from Shopsmith or not...they never came back to report their findings (unfortunately a common issue on this forum particularly with new forum members).

I had this type wheel on my workbench, after about 5 years or so they crumbled and had to be replaced. Have a set of SS wheels to install on my Shopsmith but after similar ones fell apart I am reluctant.

I have a few questions:

How long have you had them installed on your SS?
How often and how far do you roll your SS around?
How smooth is the surface you are rolling across?
Did you notice problems with the wheels before one fell apart?

I bought a set during SS’s last sale on these wheels, despite having seen the previous discussion thread, and have been assuming (hoping?) the problem affected a small percentage of wheels sold. Like any product sold, problems with them are expressed many more times than good experiences, and the environment in which the product is operated often has significant bearing on its failure. I know a failure like this would really suck!! So I’m trying to decide whether I’m willing to take the chance on having such a failure. Maybe I should buy a spare set of wheels the next time they are on sale to have on hand, and then I can keep an eye on them so I can replace a wheel before it fails.

Thanks.

Don’t remember how long I had them at least 5 years.
Don’t roll it much
On smooth concrete floor
Did not notice before it fell apart
This is reply from SS:

If you would like to send it in we can have an Engineer take a look at it and if he determines a manufacturing defect he will replace it.
We also just sell one individual 3' caster wheel 522877 Single 3" Diameter Premium Caster Wheel (1 Wheel) for $18.95.
This was my reply:
If possible I would like to purchase one wheel to replace broken one and then send the broken one back to an address you give me and if you find a defect could you credit me some type of way for the cost I pay for the new one.
Please reply and let me know how to go about this.
I will let y’all know what happens.
