Hands On Magazine

Post by banjo800 »

Does anyone know exactly how many issues of Hands On were published? When was the last one published? I have a fairly complete library but am missing issues after Jan/Feb/Mar 1986. They went to a Summer, Winter, Fall type for a few issues then Spring/Summer, etc, and I can't figure for sure whats missing. If my calulations are correct then I'm only missing 6 issues, but I would love to have an index for 1986 and beyond. I'm trying to get the complete set, but it been tough! Thanks for any help in this matter!

I have many issues, but I am not sure that I have them all. I don't want to part with them, but the CD's that Shopsmith sells contain every plan that was published in the issues that I have.

I also purchased the bound volumes of the plans, so that if I am feeling like I need to look at something in print, I will look through the pages and look at a possible new project.

It's not just the plans, it's also the articles and what not. The main thing for me is knowing what's been published and trying to obtain them. If I don't know with what issue it stopped, then I don't know what not to look for. Does that make sence? Thanks!

Hands On plan

I recently contacted Shopsmith about the plans for the Shopsmith Mark .5 and was told they are no longer available. Nick said in an earlier post that the plans originally appeared in Issue 2 (1979 I believe) of Hands On. Any of you fellows that have that issue willing to scan those plans? That is a neat project that I would love to build some day. Thanks - Alec

Good news and BAD news. I have that issue, BUT what I found is where you can order it from SS for $2.95(507905) or free with an order before Dec 31, 1979. How about the plans for the fire engine. :)
SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders, molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop.

Looks like the hands on mag started about sept/oct 1979 and the non-paper one started sept/oct 2000.

Hands On Magazine

Ok, I think I've found the answer. It appears that the magazine ceased publication with the Fall 1990 issue. There were only 2 issues in 1990, Spring/Summer and Fall. Here's a breakdown of what I know for those who are interested:

Began in 1979 with the Sep/Oct issue. Published bi-monthly
1979 - 2 Issues
1980 - 1982 - 6 Issues each year
1983 - 1985 - 5 Issues each year
1986 - possibly only 3 issues (Jan/Feb/Mar, Fall, & Christmas) I think there should be a Spring/Summer, and a Winter but I'm not sure.
1987 - 5 Issues
1988 - 1989 - 4 Issues each year
1990 - 2 Issues

If anyone can add to or correct this, please do. Also if anyone is interested in an index of sorts for Hands On, let me know. If enough people is interested I will try to make one. Thanks!

Yes a spring/summer (bound in with the Shopsmith tool guide)
1987 - 5 Issues
1988 - 1989 - 4 Issues each year (I have only 2 from 1988)
1990 - 2 Issues (I can't find any from 1990)

I may have a few not grouped with the main group, I thought I had them all but from your list I'm missing 4.

If I resurface anymore today I update but it looks like your list is correct according to what I have...
