I inherited a ShopSmith from my father and I don't know which model I have. It has a serial number of 293320 and on the plate it says it has a 3/4 hp motor. Is there someplace on the machine that it tells you if its a Mark iv or Mark V. I'd appreciate any info I can get.

If it is green and silver it is a Mark 5 (Magna original model of a Shopsmith Inc. Model V).

From the serial number it looks like a 1955 MkV model. Here is a link to the SS page for more information http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/faq/markv.htm

If is is a '1955' model it is a MARK 5! Mark V's were not produced until SS Inc started production in 1972.

The ss site sn info is incomplete(nothing between 1961 and 1978). That sn MAY be a markV IF it is grey in color, but that would assume that sn range was produced by ss Inc between 1972 and 1978.

Are you making a distinction between a Mark 5 and a Mark V?

There does not seem to be a distinction made in the Shopsmith Mark V Tool History chart: http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/toolhistory.htm

ABSOLUTELY!!!!!! ALL units manufactured by Magna... were mark 5 's. The use of mark V was started by SS Inc. The tool history site was authored by SS Inc. and apparently they did NOT want to make the distinction. ALL 'greenies' and 'goldies' (as well as later units produced from 1963 to 1967[gray, smooth texture]) were Mark 5 's. I am not sure but I think early SS Inc units until 1984 also had a smooth gray paint color. In 1984 the 2 bearing quill was introduced and I believe that is when they went to the rough texture paint. Later in 1991 the power switch was changed.

Thus the only differences are: who manufactured it - Magna engineering/Yuba/Magna American/Shopsmith Inc. - gilmer/poly v belt - the quill bearing(s) - and the power switch.(I am ignoring the 'weight' differences).
I realize this is over kill for your question, but thought it might be informative to others.

This is a summary of the history as I understand it. I am NOT sure of the accuracy for the 1963 to 1967, 1972 to 1984 periods, but are my conclusions based on what little info I have encountered.

So long as we are going into this I might as well point to a bit of history per my research.

ED How did you do the single post link????

Dusty: Just noticed you added the MArk 5 manual while I was 'typing'. Looks like a 1960's version . . . . Point?

When you get to a thread the post number is to the right, as shown below the post was number 8. If you click on the 8 you see that post only and you can get the URL at that point. There are other ways but that is an example of one simple way to do this.
