Bearing replacement on Drive Sleeve Assy. (part 56)

Has anyone had success replacing the two bearings on the drive sleeve assy? ShopSmith wants $100 for the entire assy. They do not offer just the bearings.
I did a search for the bearing which is marked "3205 ND Made in USA" to determine $$$ but couldn't locate one that was a sealed bearing.
Anyone have any info?

Yes, you can replace the bearings but it takes a hydraulic press with a bearing separator to do it properly. I just pulled all the bearings (quill drive, quill, motor) and went down to my local bearing supply house (Motion Industries in Boise,ID) and had them match the bearings. They have cross references for most major brands or can measure the existing bearings for fit (mine came from a 1953 Greenie). I can get you the part numbers if you need them. I'm not sure if the Greenie bearings will match the more current shopsmith models.

I have a greenie also...1955. Do you recall the price for the 2 bearings?

I paid between $8 and $10 for each bearing. With tax it was close to $50 for the full set of 5. If you want the brand and part number to order from the web, let me know.

Maybe you could just post it all to the forum. There might be several who could use that data.

When removing the bearings on the drive sleeve assy., does the nylon drive and ring assy. (part 57) have to also be removed? If so, how?

I've only done the Gilmar (Greenie) drive and it doesn't have a nylon drive.

the nylon drive can easily be removed with two screwdrivers (one on each side) and pop it off. it has a spring type retainer. then pop it back on when ready. i have pressed several sets of bearings on in my machinst type vise using sockets the proper size. never press on the balls of the bearing or the outer race.

Here is the replacement bearings for the Greenie (1953) with Gilmar Drive and single bearing quill. I pretty sure that Shopsmith has used several manufacturers over the years. I have no clue as to the bearings on the idler shaft or how to replace them. You might just want to stay with the original part number...I believe they are still available.
