Hi all
I got an older Shopsmith from someone (bought in 1978) and not having a manual I have to figure things out on my own. I am trying to take it apart to clean and oil it. When I plug it in the motor hums but the shaft does not turn.
Is there a lock for the shaft? Do I have to put something in place for it to turn?
Where do I oil or grease the unit?

Thank you both for this information. I will take the time to read it all carefully before undoing screws. Did find out though that the machine that I thought was from 1978 is actually from 1962, with a 1-1/8hp motor.

Diane - it sounds like you might have a something binding behind the control sheave. Happened on a unit I picked up recently where the shaft on the back had broken and wedged itself in place. Once you feel confortable reading through the information the other members have posted, pop the inspection cover off and take a look inside. You'll be able to see right away if something is locking that sheave in place and preventing it from moving.

Next step will be to remove the belt cover and take off the drive belt (there are several instructions on this site on how to do this). Once safely removed and positioned out of the way, plug in and turn on the motor to see if it spins freely.

What MAY be occurring is the motor belt has slipped too far down into the control sheave and is jammed. You will be able to see this from the 'hole' under the ShopSmith 'medallion'. If so it makes getting the belt off more difficult. Please refer to the instructions for removing the belt as previously suggested. Note that the control sheave needs to be in 'high speed position'. If adjusting it is not possible, you may have to remove the speed dial and quadrant gear etc. GOOD LUCK Holler if you need any help!:)

Previous suggestion to check on belts is excellent starting point, plus you can try to move drive sheave, remove belt, and try motor w/o connection to control sheave.

Had some time off this morning and took off the cover where the motor is located. Will take the unit out in the front next week and blow with the compressor to get some of the dust out. Took off the larger of the two belts and the motor turned. That made me very happy. The belt was hard to come off because it seemed to be jammed in there. Put it back and the whole thing now turns but the belt seems to be the wrong size. It rubs on both sides on the sheave. There is a number on it "Shopsmith 3052 DF". Cannot find this on the site. Found an instruction paper with this number from the "Magna" company in Cincinnati Ohio.
I will change both belts when I find out which ones are the right ones to order for this model.
The next step for me is to clean it and oil it properly. The whole thing is dry.

OKAY folks, she needs some help before buying belts.

It has been confirmed that she has a unit built in 1962 and that it has a 1 1/8hp motor. It seems that this means she has one of the last models built with a Gilmer Belt. Is that correct.

If so,reham will likely require a gilmer belt and a drive belt.

Gilmer Belt (521683) and Drive Belt (521682) about $40 plus shipping depending on what is on sale when you order.

Do thorough inspection while you arer cleaning. Some of these other parts are likely candidates and ordering them now would save on shipping.
