RoyD1992 Mark 2 parts questions

Post by chapmanruss »

RoyD1992,

Consider this a place to get information on your Mark 2 as HopefulSSer suggested.

You asked in the Shopsmith vs Jacobs MC8K26 Chuck topic,
I'm looking for a tailstock and some other parts for a mark 2 but I've read I can use parts from the mark 5, I'm completely new to this, so any help would be great. I live in salem oregon if anyone around here knows of anyone selling parts.
I just bought the mark 2 to get into woodworking and I've always enjoyed using old machinery.
The answer you already got is correct. The link JPG provided to ebay is an option for a Mark 5/V Tailstock.

From what I have seen of Mark 2's for sale the Tailstock part that clamps on the Extension Table is one of the commonly missing parts. I have two Mark 2's, one restored and one waiting for restoration. One had the Tailstock the other did not. I have only seen 1 Mark 2 Tailstock part for sale by itself (on ebay) which I bought for the second Mark 2 I have. When found Mark 2 parts tend to be more expensive than mark 5/V parts that can be used to replace them. Oddly though "complete" Mark 2's for sale tend to be less expensive but commonly missing or have broken parts.

The Table system of the Mark 5/V can replace the ones for the Mark 2. If your Mark 2 Extension Table, for example, needs to be replaced than you can get a Mark 5/V 500 Extension Table to replace it, but you would also need the Mark 5/V 500 rip fence too. Replacing the Main Table would bring similar needs since it would also require the carriage and fence too.

Before investing more money into the Mark 2 you may want to consider getting a Mark 5/V instead. Mark 2 replacement parts are not easily found. Since the Mark 2 was made as a cheaper alternative to the Mark 5 back in the later 1950's getting a Mark 5/V may be more cost effective in the long term. There are good buys to be found if you are patient enough to wait for them. If you are interested in going the Mark V route, there is one on craigslist for sale that also includes a Bandsaw and Jointer located in Tigard OR. At a thousand dollars it is a good buy for the condition and all that is included. The Mark 2 can be restored to a good functioning tool so don't let me persuade you to give up on it but consider the costs associated with restoring it vs getting an alternative.
