I think if you change ".net" to ".com" those links will get you there.

Haverstrawman wrote: Fri Jul 26, 2024 7:30 pm Nobody has a simple instructions on how to correctly put together a Shopsmith V ends and tubes. Better known as basic set up, I find that strange.
Please look at this thread with instructions for reassembly of the base and carriage: viewtopic.php?p=41340#post41340

The instructions are detailed and include pictures.
I don't remember what's going on with those links. The original '.net' extensions convert to '.com' for me automatically. Can anybody help out Haverstrawman get to that thread so he can get his machine re-assembled correctly. He can look at this whole thread for more setup/reassembly instructions: viewtopic.php?p=41339#post41339.

Older links may create the .net .???? problem(Or whatever the confusion is!)

I just realized that is the same as just posted above.

OK so I figured it out. The bed tubes that go into the end with the that pivots has two ribs and a stop in the casting to properly seat the bed tubes. Now the end with the handle that it tightens the way tubes has two ribs but no built in stops. I was using one of the ribs as a stop. Boy was that wrong. I seated the two bed tubes on the ribs and gave it about 1/4 inch past the hold down clamp and tightened the clamp. The way tubes were fully seated on the other end and tightened the hidden set screws. Then laid the tubes down and put the handle side clamping device fully seated and tightened the set screws. Everything lined up and the wheels elevate at both the 1/4 and 1/2 inch and rolls as it should.

Thank you everyone that made suggestions. To all those talking about spacers I am still confused about that.

You have the conventional way tube assembly that only tilts up at one end for drill press mode. There is an upgrade available and standard on the newest Mark 7 model that allows the way tubes to be tilted up from either end. With that upgrade the way tubes are a little short to fit tight end to end in the new base castings. The tubes are then then secured only with set screws they don't fit tight on either end. This makes some of us a little nervous although there may not be any actual problem, but it would be nice if Shopsmith included a pair of little spacers so the the way tubes would fit tight end to end when upgraded with the double tilt option.

Since you're new to Shopsmiths it would be a good idea to browse the product line and familiarize yourself with all the available options. There is plenty of technical information in this forum, sometimes well organized, other times just ad hoc conversations such as in this thread.

Glad you got your machine assembled. Look around here and you'll find you never needed to do anything except remove the legs to transport your machine home. Come back any time if you need help. Did you get the links to work?

Did not get the links to work................I have a really nice drill press so more than likely will never raise the smith to the upright position. I just sat there enjoying a brew saying to myself It cannot be anything but simple. I applied the K.I.S.S. principle (keep it simple stupid) and figured it out. Just glad I got it together in proper order. Next time the Smith will be moved it will be by its new owner, not me. I moved from Haverstraw NY to Sneads Ferry NC and have a huge garage. Now retired and plan on making things for craft shows as they have many such shows in this area. Life is good in retirement.

WOW I went to adjust the jointer knives................took a while to figure this one out.................the previous owner must have used paste wax on the knives...............so the jointer knives were stuck to the wedges and I mean stuck .......so after taking the knives and the wedges completely out and breaking them apart I was able to adjust the blades to 1/8 cutting height......now my lathe is adjusted, using brad points is spot on....the jointer is adjusted perfectly using the concentric mounting tubes...my wife had to help me do the final adjustment......band saw is also spot on to the power adapter. the only thing I have to do is set up my WEN wet chisel sharpener Shopsmith sure does have a lot of rules to set up a Shopsmith but not very forth coming with basic set up...this forum not very helpful with basic set up.........to all those that posted about spacers ETC in my original post I stated my shopsmith was a 1984 edition

1984 was 40 years ago. Who knows what someone might have changed between then and now. Saying "it's a 1984 edition" isn't a guarantee of anything. If I said simply that mine is a "1960 edition" then that would ignore a lot of upgrades I've made to it, and might lead to some very wrong answers to questions.

I've had my Mark V just shy of 3 years. I knew nothing about them before getting it. I learned nearly everything about basic setup from this forum.

" Shopsmith sure does have a lot of rules to set up a Shopsmith but not very forth coming with basic set up...this forum not very helpful with basic set up.........to all those that posted about spacers ETC in my original post I stated my shopsmith was a 1984 edition"

Since I am the one who caused the discussion regarding spacers/double tilt, I feel the need to defend those who responded.

Realize those who respond thusly do so with the intention of expanding/determining information that SS typically does not divulge.

Also, realize that just because a particular SS began life as a specific version, it may have been greatly 'upgraded' during the intervening years. For example an early "A" sand casting greenie can be upgraded all the way up to a Mark 7 so there may be no 'pat' answers.

We all have a desire to share all knowledge we have acquired during our experience with anything ss related or otherwise and want that knowledge to be as accurate as possible thus minimizing the likelihood of misunderstanding.

And yes this can lead to thread deviating from the original purpose that the original poster had in mind when the thread was initiated.

So if thee was irked by the spacer deviation that served no purpose to thee I apologize for all those who caused thy 'irkness'.

That said, the forum members both current and future readers will benefit from that 'off topic' discussion. I say off topic from your intended purpose, however, the subject(which thee defined as way tubes) properly included discussion regarding way tube lengths for an option which you do not have.

I understand your frustration at having discussion irrelevant to your immediate needs, however others who prowl this forum will benefit from what occurred.

As we often suggest to new posters to create an independent thread I should have done so myself, so I apologize for not doing so.

I expected a simple answer but instead got a lengthy discussion.

Glad you are making significant progress, but I do not understand the 1/8" cutting height comment. At the risk of creating another 'off topic' discussion, what did you mean by that?

The jointer needs to be adjusted to a cutting height of 1/8 inch and If i did not take the wedge and blade completely apart I would have never been able to adjust the jointer blades to 1/8 inch cutting height as they were bonded together for some reason. I now have the lathe, with the help of two chucks and two brad point bits to have it align perfectly and the bandsaw align and the jointer align perfectly. The key was the proper install of the bed tubes. On this site and the Shopsmith site instructions were not forth coming. People were way off subject on this site and the moderator made excuses for the off subject posts. Really
