Hexagon hole in jointer

Now that I am the proud owner of 2 Shopsmith jointers I have noticed that one has a hexagon shaped hole near the end of the fence. The other one doesn't have this hole. Anyone have a thought on this?

You are looking at an older version. The older versions(that came with an aluminum blade guard) had this hole on both the normal location outboard and back from the blade so as to cover the blades until the workpiece pushed it away from the fence. The second hole allows you to move it to the other side of the bed when rabbeting. This covers the otherwise exposed rotating blades BEHIND the fence.

I knew it had a reason. My other jointer has a guard attached to the fence now that you mention it.

They do NOT put hex shaped holes in cast iron for NOTHING!;)
