Mark V Motors

Post by GG0452 »

I have read that SS used at least 4 different motor manufactures for the Mark V through the years (Emerson, GE, AO Smith, Franklin). Do anyone know the years used and numbers of each? Is one of the 1 1/8 HP motors better than the others? If you were looking for a replacement/refurbishment motor is there a preferred manufacturer? Or is it safer to just buy a new one from SS?

Do you know anything about the new SS Mark V motors made by US Motors – NIDEC Motor Corp. ? Any operation or repair history?

Thanks

GG0452,

Welcome to the Shopsmith Forum.

You are correct about the different brands of motors used in the Mark5/V conventional Headstock through the years. If I was looking at replacing a motor there is the choice of possibly buying new, although Shopsmith currently lists the motor as unavailable, or buying used. With owners buying the Do-it-yourself Power Pro Upgrade many are selling the old no longer needed parts including the motor. I would look for a newer 1-1/8 HP Motor.

I upgraded one of my Mark V's to the Power Pro Headstock with the Do-it-yourself kit. I have the Power Pro Gen 1 and have been happy with it. There have been problems reported here in different topics.
