Rotation

Post by dondor58 »

After owning my mark v for 25 years. It occurred to me today that the machine rotates counter clockwise. Makes sense for the saw and lathe. But not the drill press. Never had a problem with drilling. It makes no logical sense that the bits can drill at.all.
Am I missing something, or.just over thinking this.

Just curious.

Question is, why do you think it makes no sense for the drilling operations?

I think you are under thinking this. ;)

Depends on your point of view, I think. Its like mounting a turning on the left hand spindle...now the piece is turning clockwise, per the operator's point of view, making it possible to reverse sand the piece. When mounted on the main spindle that same piece is turning counter-clockwise, as seen from the point of view of the turner. Viewed from above, the drill bit is spinning clockwise when the machine is in the drill press mode.

Which IS the 'normal' direction of twist of the bit from the viewpoint of the bit.

I was over thinking it. When looking at it from the front, it turns counter clockwise. Drill bits turn clockwise from above. But when I looked at my hand drill head on it turn counter clockwise. Just caught me off guard.
Thanks for all the responses.
