Tell us about your AVATAR

Post by reible »

Since we do a bit of social networking here we might as well discuss our avatar. Got a story behind it? Your own design? Have a obscure meaning you are hiding from the rest of us? Have no idea what I'm talking about?

To get the ball rolling I'll tell you about mine. The idea was to combine superman, ShopSmith, and add a touch of the flare from the Ford Cobra. The original was in vector format done using a now defunct design software program. All I have left is the bit map output, and a small size at that. I may have to redo it as I would like to put it on a few more things in my shop and maybe make a clock face out of it.

Not all that profound or original but that is the story.

Mine is my signature, of course. It is my first avatar, but may knot be my last.

My current one is a photo of the ID plate of my 510. I mapped out the background in Photoshop & made it transparent so only the plate shows.

I may go back to the moose someday, or the float plane, or maybe the pup... Time will tell.

In any event if I keep this one I do need to fire up Photoshop and tweak the settings a bit - it needs more "pop".

This is the grade insignia for the rank I held in the USAF at the time I retired thirty years ago.

My other hobby is model railroading/ railroad history, plus my Dad, grandfather, and great-grandfather all worked for this railroad (railroad police, engineer, and conductor respectively).

One of my hobbies is black powder shooting. I have a friend that is a custom rifle builder and has made me a couple beautiful Lancaster long-rifles. I also maintain his web site for him. My avatar is a 45 caliber 1700's dragoon that Tim made for me. It has an original barrel, lock and trigger, and all the other parts were made by Tim. Every piece of metal (including screw heads) is engraved, the stock has German Silver wire inlays, and the tip of the ramrod is antique ivory. It's a beaut...

Here's a closer view of it, along with a hawk and scrimshawed priming horn that Tim made for me, and a patch knife with a Damascus blade, antler handle and pewter bolster that I made and my possibles bag.
