help with my new-to-me shopsmith.
Hello everyone, I'm new to the forums, I have poked around trying searches for keywords and reading what I could but I have not been able to get definitive answers to what I'm looking for.
I got a Shop smith through an auction and I'm trying to a figure out the exact model, I'm thinking it is the 500 after reading a bunch of the posts but want to make sure. Its serial number is 22777 and has the round red dial with the speeds and tool settings around it. It also has the skinny mechanical on off switch. the unit is grey in color. pictures are attached.
My biggest issue is it did not come with the main table. It has the bottom part of the table that attaches to the two horizontal rails but not he uprights or the table.
It also does not have the saw, or the lower saw guard. it does have the upper saw guard, but it is not the older round style, it has the pointed front edge like the ones I see on the 510.
i does not have the 12 inch disk sander.
The last big item that is missing in the end stock which sucks because the reason I wanted it was to do some shaping withe lathe.
I've taken pictures of all of the parts that came with it and it look like a hodge podge of several accessories. and since I cant find any of the manuals for the accessories I know it has without buying them I was hoping you all could help me sort out the pieces. and tell me what pieces I need to get it to be a whole machine.
it came with the 11 inch band saw which I believe is intact and whole, a 1 inch belt strip sander, which I also believe is whole minus the belt, a jointer with a fence which I believe i whole, a biscuit jointer which I could use help determining if it is whole, a mortise that i don't know if is whole and a bunch of random parts that I could use help identifying.
I found a table assembly for a 510 at a good price but have read the table is not swappable with the 500. but i can not determine if it is just the table or if the whole assembly can not be swapped. meaning the part that connects to the two main horizontal bars.
i would appreciate if someone could let me know what he best option is for a table and maybe some pictures of what table i can use. same with the tail stock.

Re: help with my new-to-me shopsmith.
Welcome!
It's most likely a 500 (the tables and table guide rails are what differentiates 500 vs 510 vs 520). You say:
"It has the bottom part of the table that attaches to the two horizontal rails"
That's called the carriage. If you can post a pic of that we can tell if it's a 500 or if someone upgraded it to 510/520.

Re: help with my new-to-me shopsmith.
Yes you have a hodge podge(not bad) of parts. Any Mark 5 (goldie or greenie or later gray) or Mark V 500 table assembly(table with trunion etc.) wil work. Any SS mark 5/V 500/. . . . . tailstock will work. The biscuit jointer appears complete. That small arbor to the left of the second small faceplate looks like a lathe screw center(it is missing the #12 flat head screw). Hang onto those guide pins(in the same pix).
You have the mortise hold down, but not the mortise bit holder.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/205140075334
You have a drill chuck with what appears to have a MT2 shaft and the MT2 to 5/8" shaft adapter, but no tail stock to insert them into??
You have a blade height gauge for a planer??
If the strip sander has the 1" plated attached you are fortunate to have all three platens(1", 1/2", curved).
Have no clue re the rectangular sheet metal plate in the last PIX.

I recommend getting that front table extr8ension.

Re: help with my new-to-me shopsmith.
pics of the sander, saw, and planer. the bottom portion of the table support is visible in the one with the planner.
can i remove that support and install the support and table from a 510. i have a lead on a good price for the whole table and bottom support for a 510.
JPG when you say the planner blade height gauge, are you talking about the small metal tab at the bottom of the picture with the large square metal piece.
also the guide pins are you talking about the silver pins with threads at the very bottom. if so what exactly are they for?
when you say i have all three platens, what are you speaking of, I assume you see the other two in the picture. i just don't know what they are.
why would the drill chuck shaft go into the tail stock. i actually cant figure out how that drill head attaches to the motor. i need a manual but again didn't want to buy until im positive of the model.

Re: help with my new-to-me shopsmith.
That's a 500 carriage. To use 510/520 tables you need to use the 510/520 carriage, which you can certainly do. You'll need to (carefully) remove the tie bar at the end of the way tubes that lifts (as opposed to the hinged end), remove the headstock, remove the 500 carriage, then install the 510/520 one. Assembly is the reverse of removal. Note there is (or should be) a free-floating spacer ring that goes between the headstock and carriage. It sets the distance between the two so that the saw blade is correctly located in the table slot. The 510/520 is wider than the 500 one. You can fabricate one yourself if needed, but better would be you get the original with the other parts.
Going to the newer 510/520 table system is WELL worthwhile. Here are pics of mine before and after upgrade to 510

Re: help with my new-to-me shopsmith.
The white plastic parts are the power couplers that drive the bandsaw, jointer, and all the other accessories like that (collectively called "SPTs" -- Single- or Special Purpose Tools).
The ribbed cylinders are the lock handle that secure the SPTs. They lock onto the posts on the SPTs. You can see where they go in the pictures of mine.
The stepped tubes are offset mounting posts which allow you to align the drive hub of an SPT with the drive hub on the headstock. Those look like the ones for the bandsaw but I could be wrong.

Re: help with my new-to-me shopsmith.
You have received a lot of information already, but I will try to help too.
Your Mark 5 serial number SS22777 was made in July 1978. It has the "B" Headstock and as you said, "the skinny mechanical on off switch."
One of the first things I recommend you get is an Owner's Manual for your Mark 5. Not only will it help you identify the parts you have but how to use and maintain your Mark 5. Since you don't have manuals for the SPT's like the Jointer, Bandsaw etc. you should get manuals for those also. Some manuals are available in the Manuals & Information section under Learn for download (PDF) and/or purchase while others are not available at all for some reason. Don't buy reprinted copies of manuals on eBay as these are commonly available for free as PDFs from other sources. Since you want to upgrade you could buy the MARK V 520, 510, 505 Owner's Manual and Reference Guide part number 845525 from Shopsmith. There is the MARK V 520S Owner’s Manual part number 857500 available for download at the link below which is very similar to the Model 510 that can help. The main differences are the Fence and Rails plus the 520S has the double-sided Table Posts and the Double Tilt Bench Ends feature like the Mark 7.

Through the link below to the Forum Topic Shopsmith Large Format Drawings, Illustrations and More you can access Everett's Google Drive which has a lot of information including an older Jointer Manual and Planer Manuals.

The upper Saw Guard in your pictures is not one for the Mark 5 like yours with the original Table/Fence System AKA Mark V 500. I'm not even sure it belongs to the other Mark V models, the 510/505 or 520.
If you are going to change the Table/Fence System to the 510, or you may even consider the 520, you will need the Saw Blade Guard set for those Mark models. With that in mind you shouldn't spend money on parts that go to the original Table System but use that money towards the upgrade. As has already been said to upgrade from the original Mark 5/V Table/Fence system you have to change the Carriage. Besides the Tables, Fence and Carriage the upgrade requires some longer Arbors and the Hub for the Sanding Disk. When looking for the Sanding Disk, if you plan to get one, make sure it has the longer Hub.
Above I said you may even consider the upgrade to the 520/520S with the Pro Fence. The reason is the 520S is still a current Table System which is used on the Mark 7. New replacement parts specifically for the older original Table System (500) and the 510/505 Table System are no longer made. The main difference between the 510 and the 520 Table Systems is the Fence and the Fence Rails.

Re: help with my new-to-me shopsmith.
The picture below shows where the two Accessory Mount Locks go. It is the same location on the Headrest end of the Bench as the Base and Arm shown below. These lock the SPTs or the Extension Table in place.
_ .
Another item show in your pictures is the Planer Knife Setting gauge like the one shown below. It is used to set the height of the Planer Knives evenly in the Cutter Head.
_ .
The pins with the threaded end go in a Shaper Table Insert as shown below. The Shaper table Insert shown below is for the 510/505/520, 520S, Mark 7 and Mark 4 Table System. The Table inserts for the Mark 5/Mark V 500 original table System are rounded on both ends.
_ .
The parts pictured below are the Mounting Locks for the Mark Mount 12" Planer. A single one is also used for the Speed Increaser and Speed Reducer.
_ .
As you find other parts you are having trouble identifying post a picture and we can help identify them. It is common to find non-Shopsmith parts mixed in when buying a used Shopsmith.
