Stand alone planer needs some help

The person I bought Mark V 510, called yesterday and said he found his dad's planer and did I want it. Picked it up this morning and is going to need some TLC. The outfeed shield is missing and one of the brushes and brush caps to the feed rollers motor is missing. Seems that Shopsmith has no parts for this planer and a search on ebay doesn't yield results either. Perhaps if I can remove the other brush, I can find proper replacements. Wondering if it would be possible to remove the motor feed and convert it to a manual feed with a hand crank. Not sure what I can do about the outfeed cover. The Thickness Adjustment crank wheel is still quite stiff when turning even after cleaning all four of the table mounting posts. the rear of the table seems to be about 1/16 closer to the tie bar than the infeed end. Maybe synchronizing the posts per the owner's manual will help.

It appears that Shopsmith still has some planer chip chutes for sale. Cover or no, you’ll want one if you get the planer working. With one, the outfeed cover may not be absolutely necessary.

For planer parts, keep checking ebay. Set up an alert to notify you when new listings appear. Such listings are rare, but with a little luck and patience you may find what you need.

The brush/holder is the most difficult part to find. Wonder how Mark(my growth rings) made out with his search.

Your Planer is an earlier one as indicated by the Table Height Adjustment Wheel/Crank. Your Mark Mounted Planer was made in December of 1983. Shopsmith does still have some Planer parts as BuckeyeDennis stated. They had a sale on them not to long ago and I received my order yesterday which had some of the Planer parts. If you look under the heading SHOP on the main page and go down to Parts, scrolling down the page you will find the Planer with many parts still available. One would be the Planer Chip Chute (P/N 300001) that appears to be missing on yours and a new one would be the upgraded version. I you find parts listed as Not Available there, I would suggest calling Shopsmith to find out if they still have a needed part that may no longer be listed. This is where a manual with a parts list and diagram will be helpful.

For those parts that are no longer available you will have to find them on the used market. They do come up from time to time. Usually from a Seller who gets a Tool like the Planer, disassembles it and sells the parts individually. I have seen the Feed Motor for sale used but they are usually listed for a premium price. A Manual Feed Crank Assembly is one of the items that may come up for sale. It is how I got one for my Planer. Something to know when finding Planer parts used is almost all the parts are the same between the Mark Mount Planer and the Pro Planer. The main difference is the Table and that the Pro Planer is mounted on a stand with a motor to turn the Cutter Head.

The feed motor had the same problem with the missing brush holder, but Scott mentioned something about finding an aftermarket replacement for the brush holder. I can't find the video now, but maybe someone else can locate it. Even better Scott might chime in here if he has found a replacement. Okay, so I found part of the answer. This was that YT video from Scott where he shows a planer feed motor with the missing brush cover. In the video he simply replaced it with an entirely new feed motor he had laying around. However, there was one of those non video posts that Scott did on YT around this same time where he talked briefly about his search for a 3rd party brush cover and trying to get one to fit the SS planer feed motor. I don't know how to get to those YT non-video posts and haven't seen them recently...did YT abandoned this feature on their platform? Oh well, hopefully Scott will chime in if he succeeded in finding a suitable replacement for those brush covers.

In trying to find replacement brush holder parts, I found that patience is not one of my better virtues, so I went through my junk drawers to see about a work around for the missing/damaged brush holder caps. Pictures show the parts used and the result. Working as it should now and the planer chip chute with dust collection is on the way. Thanks for all the advice and information. Now on to the bandsaw manual and see what shape it is in.

Looks like a good solution to me. I don't know if Scott ever found a suitable aftermarket brush cover replacement. Also, are you missing a bolt that secures the feed motor to the planer?

The head of the bolts that mount the motor to the housing are inside of the housing and all four are there. Soon after I posted this the better half came into the shop and asked if I had started on another cedar chest for her, she said she smelled the cedar shavings soon as she opened the door. Told her to be patient just trying out the repair job.
