Taking apart my father’s greenie. It also came with a box of used parts. In the box is a shorter quill than the one removed.

question is….. it appears my father upgraded to a longer quill? Im guessing? Is this likely or is there another reason for a quill change?

I’m planning on swapping to v belt and double bearing quill anyway… just wanted to know the reason for the 2 quills and if there were improvements with the longer one.

My longer term plan is to refurbish the greenie for sentimental reasons. I’m considering buying a used 510 to rob the parts like, the motor, table, guards, floating table, and v-belt system. Any recommendations on this endeavor?

I am guessing the shorter quill is from a Mark 2. A lower cost alternative to the Mark 5.

The shorter Quill Assembly came from one of two possible sources. As JPG said the Mark 2 used a shorter Quill than the Mark 5. The other possible source would be a 1961 "Goldie" Mark 5 with a C hand engraved at the end of the serial number. See the first picture below for an example of the serial number. It used a shorter Quill for the different Drive Sleeve Assembly used in those "C" Gilmer Drive Mark 5's made just prior to the change to the Poly V Drive. That Mark 5 "C" Drive Sleeve and Quill Assemblies are in the second picture below.

The pictures below are from the Mark 2. The first is the Quill Assembly followed by the Drive Sleeve Assembly.

The Quill is similar to the Mark 5 "C" Quill, but the Drive Sleeve Assembly for the Mark 2 is very different from the Mark 5 "C" Drive Sleeve.

Did you happen to get an extra Drive Sleeve Assembly in that box of parts? If so compare it to the pictures above.

As for using Mark V 510 parts on your Mark 5 Greenie, that is not a problem. Last year my wife's uncle gave me his 1957 Mark 5 Greenie which had been upgraded to the 510 Table/Carriage/Fence system. Upgrades and other changes made to the Mark 5/V over the years can be added to older tools. It is a unique feature to have in a tool that has been around since its introduction in 1954 able to be upgraded to current options.
