Hi all,
Thanks again for the words of advice and encouragement on my previous thread:

I went out and bought the neglected Shopsmith today. The guy sold it to me for $75, since I pointed out it's missing a few pieces. At that price, I figured I couldn't go wrong (it has the bandsaw and jointer attachments).

Well, I will be spending some time carefully taking apart and inspecting this specimen, and hopefully getting it back into some kind of usable shape. I sort of like cleaning and restoring things, so this could turn out to be an interesting project.

One thing I am happy about: this poor neglected tool won't have to spend another night out in the rain!

I will be no doubt be learning from all of you in working through whatever will be needed to make this a useful tool again, and thank you in advance for your help and advice.

WOW! thats a deal.

There should be a law to punish people who treat a Shopsmith that way.
Ans a tax credit to people like us who saves them.

I am curious as to what the item with the crank handle is on top of the table in the 'original' pix.

You really really need to acquaint your self with the WASHING soda/electrolysis rust removal process. You may need to do what mike did to get the headstock off the way tubes(his er10 thread).

Glad you DO enjoy 'resurrecting' stuff. If so this WILL be a picnic. BTW the later pix indicate a much newer version than at first we thought. It has a "B" headstock with lock out holes on the switch 'wings'. This means a 1 1/8HP motor with a simple centrifugal start switch.

Proceed carefully and you will be rewarded with a great sense of satisfaction as well as a great tool!

BTW Where in Ontario are you? Add it to your 'profile'.

P.S. Bill Mayo likes 'KROIL', I like "K1"(kerosene) as a penetrating fluid. The kerosene may take longer, but does work.(it is a whole lot cheaper)

I just took off the front cover of the headstock. Bit of sawdust in there but not too bad. Both shafts turn freely. Belts looks good. The engine is indeed an 1 1/8hp for which I am thankful. I haven't tried to power it up until I do some more checks, as guided by the shopsmith videos and the posts to which you've pointed me to.
Used some scotch scouring pads and a bit of 600 grit paper to a section of the upper tubes, and they are coming out reasonably smooth and clean. So hopefu lly the rust wasn't too deeply set in.
I have an assortment of penetrating oils and such, but will give kerosene a try as suggested.
Small steps make for good walking, as the old chinese saying goes...

Glad you've joined the forum. I have learned MUCH here. Great bunch of guys that are willing to help in every area. You've got yourself a great machine and it's up to you the level that you want to bring this beast back up to. Definitely focus on the the inspection and cleaning process shown in the sawdust sessions. The cosmetics mean nothing if it's not mechanically 100%.

Make sure to take lots of photos as you go through the process.

Don't see it in the photos........Did you get a jointer fence with it?
