Newbie to Chucks! (What chucks fit SS)

Post by tsaguy »

Looking for a chuck for my ShopSmith Mark V.

I called the Woodcraft store close to me and they have a Nova Chuck that does not have threads, which is what I was told I would need.

I have heard mention on here of people using Talon and OneWay Chucks, how are those mounted to the shaft? Is there an adapter for the SS that allows you to thread your chucks onto your power-unit?

(My terminology is probably off here, as I have only been turning for 4 days now)

So far I have made a very tiny bowl, and pencil holder from Douglas Fir.

chuck for shopsmith

Post by RobertTaylor »

first off, welcome to the forum. next just about any chuck can be used on your shopsmith with the proper adapter. no matter what chuck you get you will need an adapter for the shopsmith. i use an "original" nova chuck and a nova "midi" chuck (both come with 1" x 8 TPI) with an adapapter from pennstate industries. nova does NOT make an adapter for either of these chucks that will fit a shopsmith. nova does have a "shopsmith" adapter however it does NOT fit either of these chucks. very confusing huh? shopsmth themselves offer oneway chucks with the proper adapter to fit. for new turner probably the best deal out there is the pennstate "barracuda" chuck set from amazon. it is cheaper than from pennstate (go figure) and you get free shipping. you will still need to buy the shopsmith adapter.

ShopSmith does sell OneWay chucks directly. I know there are Talon chucks that can be used with the ShopSmith also.

Penn State Industries also sells a very nice Barracuda 2 chuck and sells an adaptor for the ShopSmith that willl go from the 5/8" Dia. shaft to a 1" x 8 thread to attach any threaded chuck. I own the Barracuda chuck and am very pleased with it. I know a couple other members here have purchased one also.

Betty, sorry I didn't mean to re-post your answer, we must have been composing a response at the same time and you just hit Submit first. Looking back at your response though, I just checked pricing on the Barracuda2 chuck at Amazon and PSI. Right now PSI's cheaper:

Amazon: $215
PSI: $199.95

Although you are correct, Amazon's offering free shipping on the chuck.

I do knot know about the Nova chuck. But my talon chuck has 5/8's plain adapter that screws into the chuck. Kinda looks like a mini-faceplate. Then the other end slips onto the SS shaft.

chucks

Post by rdewinter »

tsaguy,
I have the Bacacuda 2 T/N chuck. I bought it from Penn State Industries for $199. Comes with several jaws and a nice case to keep all the parts together.
It only takes one hand to set it up which is real nice.
My only complaint is the lack of a good set of instructions or an owner's manual. I haven't begun to discover everything it can do. Also, you will need the 1 x 8tpi adapter for the SS. Penn State also sells the adapter.

Good luck turning.

Hi tsaguy,

With the exception of the very few chucks that are prethreaded for a particular headstock (e.g. the Nova Midi comes ready for a 1 x 8 tpi headstock), all chucks require an adapter to mount them to a lathe. The Shopsmith is a popular lathe, and most manufacturers make available a Shopsmith adapter (often called a 5/8" plain adapter). The Penn State 1 x 8 tpi adapter will make any chuck work that does not have a specific Shopsmith adapter.

A few other things you might consider.
Amazon sells the none T/N version of the barracuda 2 chuck just search for the CSC3000C and it is $168 with free shipping, it comes with just about everything that the T/N version does, except no bowl jaws, however you can get the jumbo bowl jaws from amazon as well CJAWFJ2 and they are $25, also with free shipping, then all you need is the adapter L5818 $17 also with free shipping, those prices are lower by in some cases as much as $10 over what Penn state industries sells them for, and here is the funny part, on amazon the vendor is PSI, so you are still getting it from the same place, your just paying less for it.

Mabey someone with a PSI chuck can answer this question, but there is one other thing to consider, the jumbo jaws are 8" does that mean that the largest item you can turn is 8" or are the jaws themselves 8" and with the chuck you can turn soemthing up to like 12-14"

Cause i also found a nova g3 chuck, you can find it on amazon as well as looking up the actuall vendor for it and you go to woodworker specialties, there website is basically just a bunch of links to an ebay store, but they sell the nova g3 with 2" jaws only and it includes the corrected adapter for the shopsmith (you just have to tell them what adapter you need) and it has free shipping for $125, then you can get the bowl jaws from them also for $65, you wont get as much for your money because you dont get all of those jaws that the PSI chucks come with, but the nova chuck has allot more options for jaws in the long run, they even have what they call soft jaws, you can find them at woodcraft, and you can cut them to whatever shape you need them to be, not to mention that they make a ton of jaws for the nova chucks, and all of the nova jaws work on almost all of the nova chucks if you want to find out more about them look up teknatool lots of reading.

The only down side is, the extra nova jaws are about $30-80 each depending on what you get.

Yep. Look right below the picture, and you will see adapter #15M80. That's the one for Shopsmith.
