As part of my shopsmith M5 maintenance program I puuleed and inspected the speed changer control. While inspecting the changer I notice a signifcant amount of worm control shaft play. Is this normal?

No, the worm gear should have no end or side play. There is a small snap ring to prevent end play from occurring. Pictures can really help us. Sorry for the time lapse concerning my subject question and receipt of your reply.
Bottomline, you were correct in your response. Evidently I somehow lost a lock washer off the end of the worm gear when rebuilding/servicing my shopsmith, and therefore the resultimg play of the worm gear. This problem has been fixed and I am back in business.
