A while back I posted some information on the V-Drum sanderI built. This has rapidly become one of the most used machines in my shop.
I finally got around to building some fences for it that improves the function even more. The fences are build from mdf and plywood with some t-track to be used for feather boards. They clamp to the top of the sander and are adjustable for width. I added supports on the bottom inside of the fences that serve as additional infeed and outfeed support. This allows me to handle longer and heavier pieces more easily.
And, the fences help when sanding edges, too. Haven't tried it as a jointer but it does even out ripping saw marks and ridges caused by a nicked jointer blade.

Yes, the fence works great for edge sanding. I made sure they were 90 degrees to the table for that very purpose.
I have also used this sander as a WIDE jointer. I only have a 4" Shopsmith jointer and it does a great job. I recently needed to joint the face of some boards 6" to 8" wide. I loaded a piece of 60 grit on the sander and started making passes. After about 8 to 10 passes, I had a perfectly flat face to work with. A little slower than a regular jointer but did the job.
Thanks for posting with pictures. I just purchase the FlatMaster (made by the VDrum people) that is stamped metal. They also sell fences, but I like yours, especially as you have modified them to aid with the extensions. Thanks again.
