I scored a Strip sander (1988 year model) off Craigslist. $50 for the sander AND older jig saw.

The strip sander is missing a few parts. The little wheel just below the upper spring loaded wheel is missing. Also the 3 platens are missing. Kinda surprised the curved one is $25 from SS. Anyone seen a sale lately from Shopsmith? They use to run a parts sale all the time.

Any tips on what to look for in doing my rebuild? The upper spring wheel is kinda stiff but does work.

Looks like the sander was run to the point the belt almost cut the cover in two by the dust port. The cord in the sandpaper was melted into the cover.
Makes you wonder what people does to their tools.
I noticed in the parts view on line it says for sanders prior to 1999. What changed after that date?

Any tips or experience with a rebuild is helpful.

Maybe a picture with the cover open so that WE can see what's missing.

I have encountered two versions. The newer ones have ball bearings and aluminum idler pulleys(2). The older ones had bronze sleeve bearings and plastic idler pulleys. I think the newer ones are preferred but I do not know if the older parts are available.

The 'ball bearing' version pn's are 515390(idler), 515422(bearing), 515409(retaining ring), 515405(1/4-20x1 1/2 cap screw) - from manual 8/93.

Wait a minute, my friend! I Just got my Strip sander a few months ago after a long backorder wait! Mine had brass bushings in plastic idler wheels. In fact, in the first couple hours of operation, I wore out an idler wheel when doing inside sanding.

Mine is dated 2/9/98 and has the metal idler wheels. Never paid attention to the bearings.... the manual that came with it is from 1993 and shows ball bearings. Sorry it is to cold to go check that fact tonight.

be careful lifting or carrying it by the table.

the trunnion has a thin spot that is delicate compared to most SS stuff.

not sure if I broke it, the teenage son of the previous owner who loaded it into my car (under the 510 maintable), or if it was broke before I ever saw it. I didn't notice it being broken before we took it off the SS in the seller's garage, though.

the replacement part from SS came fairly quickly and was cheap enough that I did not even consider trying to fix the broken one.

Have to second that issue. Mine came with a cracked part and I had it replaced. I thought it was shipping as the box was beat up but??

I tore into my sander tonight. A 4" wood screw fell out of the top wheel housing The spring was broken but 65 cents later at Sears Hardware and was ready to go.

My idler wheels are metal (heavy at that) and the have German made bearings:D Was going to order new ones but not if I am going to receive plastic with bushings. Any other new strip sander owners, What type wheel are in your unit?

I think the metal ones are the newer(current) type. I would get an 'extra' one and mount it at the upper location. That way you do not need to move it to switch between in and outside edge sanding.

Hmmmm! This is the second time you've said that. With reference to my earlier post (#3) - - I got my Strip Sander on SEPT 4th of 2009. THAT IS THIS YEAR!!! AND THAT'S PRETTY CURRENT!!! The idler wheels are plastic!! Also, I have worn out one of the idler wheels and got a replacement (also in SEPT. 2009) IT IS ALSO PLASTIC!

BTW My Strip Sander was on Backorder for approximately 8 months, so I honestly believe the one I got is the current type. IT HAS PLASTIC IDLER WHEELS!
