Casters

I’m in the process of rebuilding my 1954 Greenie and I needed new casters. The originals are those awful steel things and they’re rusty and very unfriendly to my concrete basement floor. So I went to one of my favourite places to shop, Princess Auto and found these. (Yup, I’m in Canada). I usually only buy stuff on sale but I splurged and paid the full retail price of $4.99 each. I know, decadence can only lead to self destruction but hey, they’re thermoplastic and they just plug right in where the original casters were. They’re the same 3/8” stem, 2” wheel, and they’re rated for 80lbs each. The stock number is 8039901. Just thought you’d like to know if you need casters too. Happy ShopSmithing.

I don't have them installed yet, but they're the same size as the originals, at least on my old Greenie. Welcome to the forum.

Does the 1954 Greenie use the same casters as what is listed on Shopsmith's 17 Most Ordered Parts page? I ordered a set a few weeks ago and got them within a week. They were $3.99 each.

I have a few bad casters as well, but I've been planning to just replace the wheels since I had a few spare casters that I picked up from Harbor Freight on sale for $.99 each. The diameter of the wheels is a good match for the originals. However, the hole through the wheel is about 6mm and I haven't found a suitable substitute for an axle yet so the project is in limbo for a while. Next time at Home Depot I'll look for some nails/spikes that might do the job.

That's what I was originally going to do with mine but I coudn't find the wheels any cheaper than the Princess Auto casters. 6mm is just a touch under 1/4" so try a bolt that size to see how it fits. You might have to shim the axle a bit to get a good fit but they just might work.
