My wife wanted crown molding for the dinning rm. She bought a piece of chair rail molding instead. Should I take it back or can I use it as crown?

1) Sides not beveled.

2) Shape

If you can live with 1 & 2, yes. otherwise no.

Do both, I put some chair rail into my house, I painted below the rail dark and above the rail the same paint only lightend with an addition of 25% white and it looks great!

NO! The edges are beveled to fit flush between the ceiling and the wall. The crown molding sits at a 45 degree angle to both.
