Walnut Hall table

This weekend, I finished the hall table project that I started last weekend:

This marks two firsts for me: the first project I've posted here on the forum, and the first one that I've designed myself (not built from a plan)

I know a lot of people don't like the router attachment due to the inadequate speed issue, but I used it to cut the mortises in the top of the table legs on this project without any trouble at all. A couple of featherboards, a sharp bit and several ~1/8" deep passes did the trick.

Table is solid walnut that I bought green and rough sawn 2 years ago, and the edge band is cherry. Finish is nothing but clear sanding sealer and clear poly.

Bonus points if you can identify the tasty adult beverage that I was enjoying after getting the table to its final destination. he he he

Beautiful table! My wife wants me to build a hall table, so I've been building a file of designs I like to draw inspiration and ideas from when I design mine and I'm going to add yours to the file.

A lot of the "design elements" on this table are really just "make it easy to build" elements.

The legs, for example, have a slight taper on the inside 2 faces that ends below where the rails are mortised in. This gives a look that kind of suggests a leg that's flared outward, but without any of the tricky angles that would have been required to build it.

Hey there, 2 Man! Beautiful table, with beautiful wood! I especially noticed: 1) your perfect taper on the legs, 2) your very good grain matching of the walnut top, 3) the excellent joinery of the cherry edges to the walnut and the miters. The cherry will darken over time to lessen the contrast between the center and the edges.

Thanks for emphasizing the router mortising capability of the Shopsmith!

Thanks! The floors were a project about 2 years ago.

Unfortunately, Shopsmith never made a "floor sander" attachment. Had to go the rental shop for that one.
