Reciprotools first impressions

OK before you go look up what it is or read the review do you have any idea what this tool might be?

I was out shopping with a $20 gift card the other day at Menard's and came across them so I got the tool holder and a straight stainless steel brush. I had to add some cash to the deal but $20 card help out a lot.

I had looked at them before at Ace Hardware just before Christmas but thought it look a little too expensive...

They are made in the China (another thing that kept me from buy the first time). The company is based in Saukville, WI and been around since 2002. This item was introduced in 2006/2007 so it is not that new.

Have I created enough interest that it is time to tell you just what this item is?

One way or the other this item turns your reciprocating saw in a multi use tool. You need the tool attachments system and then the tool you want to attach.

Shown to the right is what comes with the tool attachment system. Since you get two of the one part and an extra screw and washer I'm guessing this is the weak link to the system. They also sell a replacement part kit with this same bunch of parts (I think it was just over $3 for that). The attachment, in this case a brush is on the left.

The tool attachment mounts in this case a sawzall but should mount in about any brand saw like this. For testing I use the speed setting of 1, which I have no idea of a numeric rate for but it seemed slow enough to be able to hold on to and work on. You can rotate the tool to via the hex shaft that is used to mount to the adapter.

I plan on getting at least a couple of more attachments, maybe I'll wait for a bag sale or another gift card... rather then me telling you any more about this system you can do some reading yourself (if you are interested) at:

Summary of my findings is that I think I like it. I've only used the wire brush but I can see some wood rasps being useful (fine woodworking tool to go with your axe and air chisels). I am a bit worried about the "weak link" and if and when that gives out what happens.... I've got more testing for it this spring when I want to try to remove some rust on a rain barrel.
