Any recommendations for lubricating the quill spline shaft? I am thinking of using lithium grease. The previous owner(s) used what appears to be similar to wheel bearing grease. It has retained very little slop for over 60 years. It is messy and does drag. I do not believe lithium grease existed then.

I think lithium grease should work just fine.

Is this quill shaft significantly different than the Mark V quill shaft? Point being - why not just wax it?

I am referring to the splined shaft inside the outer 'quill' body. The 10e(and er) have this shaft running through the main drive shaft, and it runs all the way to the end of the shaft where the cone pulley is. It is thus exposed at the end, and is metal to metal sliding/rotating contact.

The outer surface of the quill shall be 'waxed'.

I just remembered that I used lithium grease on the splined shaft on my first 10ER I restored a year and a half ago or so. I can't remember what I used on the second one.

A related question: There were two rubber washers in/on/around?? the quill when I disassembled it and the rear drive shaft from the headstock casting, but I did not note where. I cannot locate them on any parts view, so I am assuming they were added by a former owner. One is quite similar to the rubber washer/bumper on the Mark 5/v quill. The other is slightly larger.

Any one know where they belong.

I may have a 10 ER quill in a 10 E headstock.

Next ? is regarding a caster foot pedal(previews of coming attractions!:D)

One should go behind the bearing collar. Not sure where a second one would go.

Between the 'forward' main bearing and the headstock? or the collar to which the quill stop is attached(similar to Mark 5/V as an up stop cushion).

Between the collar and the headstock as a stop cushion like on the Mark 5.

Gee, I've thought long and hard about what I used. I looked through my photographic library of the restoration and have come up with the conclusion that I must have used........air.

Now I have to take a peek. Had I consciencely used anything, it would have been lithium grease.
