My old sander was getting tired and I thought about replacing it. I've got one of the 1/3 sheet (long rectangle) pad sanders that has served me well for many years.
When I got to both of the megabox stores, I found that there were none nto be found? I found belt sanders and little 1/4 sheet jobs, but no 1/3 sheet sanders.
Whattheheck happened to them? Did I miss a memo or something??

I just looked at Sears on the web. They only carry a couple of low end models.
I'm finish sanding some long oak shelves that I just planed. I suspect that a 1/4 sheet sander may be a bit small. A belt sander has to be overkill.
This really isn't a big deal. I can use the one that I have or get a 1/4 sheet sander. I just wonder what caused the shift on the market.

You will find that the new 1/4 sheet sanders sand much faster than their predecessers. I use 3 random orbital sanders (faster yet) and one 1/4 sheet sanders. At my hardware store I haven't been able to sell a 1/3 sheet sander for 10 years or so. I have one cheap Black & Decker. A few more years and I'll have to add it to my antique tool collection.
