I have been informed that my next project should be a play table for the Twins to set up a generic Thomas the Train type play area. I have gathered some basic ideas...a play surface of 52"x38" probably 12" off the ground. I'm thinking of using 1/2" A/B plywood, making V legs from the ply, and framing the table with 5" sides, 1" above the base. 1/2" ply to keep the project light, but will it be strong enough to handle the climbing activities of twins?
Any comments or experiences would be appreciated.
Thanks, Gary

Sounds like a great project, Gary. The only thing I would add is some sort of parameter frame under the plywood with a couple of cross braces, using 2x4s and half-lap joints. This would add weight and any tendency to bow in the center, as a 52" span of 1/2" plywood can be pretty flexible. Another choice for the plywood would be baltic birch or apple ply.

This was one of my first projects. My general way of working is to find a few plans / articles about a project and apply them to my overall vision/idea. I made our Son's table from red oak, plywood, glue, and decking screws. I counter sunk the screws and covered them with wood plugs. It turned out pretty good for my first real project. It is definitely durable. I will paste the links to my resources below. I basically followed the plan in the youtube video. I also posted a picture of the table I made. Let me know if you have specific questions and I will try to help.
My dimensions were 2' x 4'. I would adjust height of legs by your child's size and expected growth over the next year.
