Speed Dial is too stiff
Hi all,
I just picked up a used 510, mostly to create a sanding station with the disk and belt. Overall it looks pretty clean, even inside the headstock. The speed dial however is very tight as I try to run it, and it even feels like it's got interference and is rubbing or almost grinding. In fact I can't seem to get it to go into the highest speed. Everything I've read or watched on video so far talks about making adjustments but they all start off with putting it into high speed. Is there a way to do it besides using the dial? Any ideas on what is making the dial so stiff?

Three Things!
1) Lubrication(lack of) Quadrant gear (dry lubricant) graphite etc
2) Lubrication(lack of) Control sheave (#10 oil) sewing machine/turbine/3 in one
3) Lubrication(lack of) Floating sheave (#10 oil) """
The third one is the most likely and the first is the least likely. They ALL need constant(every 10 hrs) attention.

Look for Achy-Punky compacted in the Gears.
Lubrication will help, but the difficulty in getting the Speed Control to turn may be compacted Wax and sawdust in the gear gullets. The worm gear and Quadrant may have filled with compacted sawdust and needs to be forcefully cleaned. Same with the shafts: if the previous owner did a lot of sanding the dust may have accumulated on the shaft, adding oil (lubrication) is causing the dust to soak up the oil and make the sheaves harder to move. It needs to be CLEANED, not just lubed.
A Goldie ,indicating some use, had a Quill that wouldn't extend far enough to be removed. It was filled with HARDENED wax/sawdust that had to be scraped out of the Advance Assembly Pinion and Quill Teeth. The Quill was soaked with Liquid Wrench for two days and the under belly of the quill wasn't still full of hardened Wax/sawdust. Same with the Table Height pinion and teeth on the table legs. At least somebody used the machine.

I cleaned everything real good. There was gunk in the porkchop gear. Took it all apart, cleaned and lubed and now everything is fine. The control handle gear has a couple bad teeth on it that causes a little stickiness along a couple points - i'll either replace or live with it since I mostly bought this to be a sanding station and won't be changing speeds a lot.

There is a fellow in Whittier, CA who repairs these speed control dials. I have had a number of them repaired by him with excellent results. The repaired dial has steel gear teeth which are less likely to strip. He regularly offers this service on Ebay.
