Two Bearing Quill

I bought a two bearing quill on eBay and it appears to be bent. If I holt it in my hand and spin the shaft I can feel it shake. If I clamp the quill to the bench and spin it with my hand there is a visible wobble at the end of the shaft. This doesn't seem acceptable to me and I'm planning to sent it back. I just want to verify this with the experts before I do.

Immediately. I would also suggest to try to contact the seller via ebay and report the problem. The seller just might refund your money and tell you to scrap the quill. I would hope that the seller would not try to resell this item.

I would say it is bad and don't use it. I resently bought a belt sander on fleabay and after receiving it I found one of the ears of the table hinge was broken after contacting the seller he said he would pay the shipping and re-emburse my money. I opted out on the deal because I did not want to see the seller put it back on the auction for another person to buy and be disappointed. I have learned my lesson now and will continue to buy from SS. The belt sander works fine so I did not loose out completely it is just that the table is not square for precise sanding but I can use my conical sander for that if I have to. It came from SS and is in perfect shape.

I have bought lots of things from ebay and other on line auctions. I have purchased items from people in other cities that I contacted via dial up bulletin boards before there was public access to the internet. I recently purchased over $300 in tools from someone I found in another forum while searching Google. The entire transaction was done via email, telephone and paypal. In more than twenty years of buying I only had one transaction that was not to my satisfaction, even when I had to return things. This one might not work out, but I'm not going to get to bent out of shape about it. Besides, if I had to pay new prices for everything. I would not have much.

Now I've done it. I've convinced someone that they should bid on eBay and I have competition.

Somewhere I have acquired 2 of the latest two bearing quills. The front bearing is 40mm OD and back bearing is 35mm OD. I actually sold one but I took it back when the buyer said the shaft was bent. These are the only 2 latest bearing quills that I have seen. Both of the shafts show the identical runout using the sanding disk after replacing the bearings. There is a .065 variation at the edge of the sanding disk as I turn the it. Not a lot but does not work for anything. I plan to investigate where the shaft is bent or the problem exists.

Yes, I have replaced a few bent quill shafts. Not that hard to bend the quill shaft. Several was from not locking the headstock and raising the headstock to the drill press position. A couple quills was from the Shopsmith falling out of the back of a pickup truck. I brought the remains of both Shopsmiths very cheaply. These all had the saw blade or sanding disk on the quill.

Be sure to let us know the seller if he does not make good on the quill. I have gotten several fund returns from PayPal for defective items. Not a way to do any selling. Good luck.

When I hold the quill in my hand and spin it I can feel it wobble. That was what tipped me to look closer.

Clamping it on the bench and spinning the shaft I can see it wobbling on the splined end. It's out enough that it may not be installable.

The seller has agreed to take it back but want's me to install and try it first. I'm thinking that even if it installs OK the bent shaft is going to vibrate and might damage something else.

I thought about replacing the bent part but looking at the Shopsmith site I appears that you can only buy the spindle assembly and I can't find a price for that tonight.

To bad it looks barely used.

I think the two bearing quill is OK. I pulled my old single bearing quill and the spindle wobbles lots worse and it doesn't cause me any problems.

I put the new one in and it seems to be fine.

He responded quickly to all my emails and seemed quite concerned that I was happy with my purchase. I am.

The odd thing was that after reading all the docs I could find, watching numerous videos, searching forums, and googleing no one said any thing about the spindle wobbling around like that. After I had already decided it was OK after all the seller mention it in an email.

I would buy from him again.
