Penetrating Oil

Found this info on penetrating oils that I thought the group may be interested in. The Acetone and ATF mix looks interesting and cheap.

I can believe this. Acetone is another product that seems to spread everywhere (very very low surface tension) add to that tranny fluid (also very low surface tension) and I would think there was very little the combo wouldn't penetrate.

Careful with the Acetone, it will go through your skin and it plays havoc the liver I'm told.

This mixture must be kept in an air tight container as the acetone will evaporate very quickly (a day or two) leaving just the ATF. Also I have to remember to shake the mixture before using as they separate quickly too. I used a glass container with a lid and a spout that I changed each time I used the mixture. I used this mixture for many years. I understand the acetone is bad on plastic like bottles.

I finally switched to Kano Kroil a couple years ago after I kept dropping the glass bottle and breaking several of the bottles. Getting older was my excuse.

Add my vote for Kroil. It's also great for cleaning guns.

I have tried that with the addition of some kerosene with good results. Limited use however. No mike I still do not have a 'formula'.

Interesting comment re plastic containers. My optician recommends acetone for cleaning plastic lenses. They be poly carbonate rather that pet though.

Yep my fingers are so smooth from excessive use, that those grooves that helped hold on to things are no longer there. - Age has nothing to do with it!:rolleyes:

I've tried it, and found it to be very poor.

Acetone and Dextron ATF are not mixible. They seperate almost instantly. So you have to shake the heck out of the bottle all the way through the application process. If you are using a normal squirt bottle, you will only be squirting whichever fluid was in the nozzle, not the mix.

As for performance, I found it to be quite sub-par. The ATF droplets did not wick particularly well, tending to stay on top. The acetone would wick, but would evaporate quickly.

Having worked around and with cars most of my life i have always found that ATF and Diesel Fuel made a very good combination. The do not seperate and seem to have the viscosity to penetrate most places.

This combination if put into a cylinder block will usually penetrate the rust and you can salvage a ceased engine.

Canadian OSHA shows nothing remarkable about acetone. USA OSHA doesn't even address it. Search for acetone came up empty.

I looked it up because I've always viewed it as contact safe.

I did a wikipedia lookup of it and you are right doesn't seem to be as dangerous as I have been lead to believe. Sorry

Although I'm still not ready to bath in the stuff.
