I installed a new twin bearing quill but i still have a little vibration causing a little run out on the lathe. Any suggestions appreciated.

Are you seeing and/or just feeling this runout? Have you measured this runout? A couple pictures showing (pointing) where this is occurring would help. If you brought the 2 bearing quill from Shopsmith, I would return it. If brought used and can be returned, I would return it. Mostly likely, the quill housing was dropped and hit the floor on the shaft end. I have a few quills that I believe this is what happen (.002-.005 runout at end of quill shaft) (arbor end). BTW, what do you consider to be acceptable runout readings? Precision to less than .005 has been my guide line for most measurements BUT you reject on these.
Following are images of the set up that I use. The aluminum blocks do nothing more than provide some stabilization. If I did this regularly, I would build some sort of bench arrangements. This "seems" to work fine for what I use it for. Avoid the flat on the shaft. It gives some real bad readings. Measurements should be taken way out at the end of the shaft.

Runout on this particular quill was +.001. As a matter of habit, I zero the setup right at the tip of the flat.

If you're getting the same reading at the same spot on the spindle over a couple of turns, I'd expect that the reading is accurate. I believe that Nick, on one of the sawdust sessions, said the single-bearing quill had about .005 runout while the two-bearing quill had about .001.

I actually do 2 different runout measurements (shaft & bearing) for each quill. I have adapted a broken headstock as I find I need to support the splined end of the single bearing quill shaft. I do the same measurement (shaft rotational precision runout) as Dusty looking for a bent shaft (vibration) while rotating the quill shaft (.002" & greater). I also do a side to side check for bearing wear without rotating the quill shaft (Bearing runout tolerances). This is the .001"-.005" measurement listed for a single bearing quill. For the double bearing quill, both measurements should be about the same (000"-0015").
